Job Title: General Assistant / Driver Location: QVSR Tilbury Seafarers Centre Reporting to: Centre Manager Position Type: Permanent Hours of Work: 24hrs p/wk Role Overview The Role of the General Assistant / Driver is to support the Centre Manager in the smooth operation of the Seafarers' Centre by providing a welcoming and clean environment for seafarers, external visitors, and the wider community. As a small charity organisation, flexibility is needed as duties will be various including retail sales, preparing and serving refreshments, driving seafarers around the port, and helping out as required to ensure the smooth running of the centre. Furthermore, GAs should ensure that in the discharge of their duties, they comply with all QVSR Seafarers' Centres policies and legislation. This role will include weekend and evening working. Key Duties & Responsibilities Centre Operations • Provide a welcoming environment to visiting seafarers and external customers. • Ensure all areas of the centres are always clean and tidy and report any defects or maintenance issues to the Centre Manager. • Support Centre Managers in managing all aspects of the operation of the seafarers' centre bar / café and shop in line with QVSR seafarers' centre policy and procedure. • Assist seafarers with phone top-ups and data SIMs, and with connecting to the internet. • Provide a 'bureau de change' facility for seafarers in line with current legislation. • Assist in maintaining adequate stock of all items for sale and conduct monthly stock takes. • Enter all sales through the till. Process customer payments using cash or centre's point of sale (POS) system. • Display merchandise in a well organised manner. • Assist seafarers in locating the products and merchandise they need. • Prepare and serve refreshments as and when required. • Assist with centre functions as and when required. • Perform centre opening and closing procedures accurately and on time. Driving / Vehicle responsibilities • Transport seafarers to and from the centre as needed. • Adhere to port speed limits, port regulations and access requirements at all times. • Complete mileage records and seafarer numbers for all journeys. • Ensure the vehicle is maintained in a clean and tidy condition – both externally and internally. • Complete vehicle checklists as required and highlight any issues to the centre manager. Checks should include: tyres, water, oil, fuel levels. General Assistant / Driver JD SC – November 2024 Page 2 of 2 • Ensure the bus is put on charge as required (electric vehicles) / adequately fuelled (diesel vehicles). • Comply with all insurance requirements as instructed: e.g. taking the vehicle for MOT testing. • Wear appropriate workwear provided, hard hat and hi-vis vest / jacket and safety footwear in case of breakdown within the port. • Ensure the vehicle is left locked when not in use. • Carry out any other requested pick-ups / jobs which require transport. • Ensure the vehicle is used for work purposes only. Other • Provide cover for other members of the team – annual leave and other absences. • Maintain good working relationship with chaplains, volunteers, and other stakeholders. • Follow standard operating procedures in line with QVSR mission, vison, values, policies, procedures, and systems. • Undertake, as required, any other duties within the daily operation of the seafarers' centres to maintain delivery of service.
