Thames & Hudson is the leading global publisher of illustrated books on the visual arts. We are looking for a well-organized, enthusiastic and self-motivated Editorial Assistant with excellent communication skills (written and spoken) to support the small team producing our award-winning list of children's books. Based in London, the Editorial Assistant will work on a wide range of tasks, providing essential editorial and administrative support within a fast-paced, creative environment.
The Role
* Provide editorial assistance across the children's list, including research, fact-checking, copy-editing, indexing, proofreading and keying in corrections
* Oversee all titles from final text through to publication, which includes liaising with our US office to generate Americanised text, and checking final text PDFs, plotters and F&Gs before print
* Communicate reprint corrections to the Reprints Coordinator
* Coordinate weekly work-in-progress meetings for the Children's team
* Independently manage first-time paperback and board book releases
* Provide general administration support including processing invoices, organising meetings and taking notes, and arranging author copies
* Provide commissioning support by drafting contracts, conducting ad hoc market research, assisting with publishing proposals and drafting sales copy as required
* Act as the main point of contact between the Children's team and other internal departments
* Communicate directly with external authors, editors, consultants and publishing partners as required, including to chase manuscripts and author questionnaires and to send sales summaries
* Independently manage the children's book fair catalogue, and check and correct children's titles in both the UK and US trade sales catalogues
* Organize book fair appointments and liaise with international publishers in relation to bought-in titles
Knowledge, skills and experience:
* Impeccable proofreading skills and an excellent command of English spelling and grammar
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Excellent time management and prioritisation skills, with the ability to effectively manage competing demands
* Reliable, methodical and conscientious and able to consistently deliver
* A proactive approach to problem-solving
* Confident and diplomatic liaising with third parties from a wide range of backgrounds
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft packages
* Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Pro
* A demonstrable interest in illustrated children's publishing
