This is an exciting opportunity to be able to work within our multidisciplinary maternity team working under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives/nurses and other health professionals. You will have a key role in supporting and educating parents during the early postnatal period by assisting parents and registered midwives/nurses to provide holistic care for newborn infants.
You will be able to provide planned transitional care for the sick baby and participate in the provision of a high standard of nursing care for the neonate through support, guidance, advice and assistance for the parents and the family within the post-natal ward.
• On a daily basis provide care for the babies including baby baths, nappy changing, eye care.
• Perform daily physical checks of babies and document findings/care into the baby care record. Report any concerns to the Nurse/Midwife in charge.
• Care of babies with special needs such as congenital abnormalities such as babies with a cleft palate needing specialist feeding and babies undergoing drug withdrawal.
• Complete routine clinical observations and neonatal abstinence scoring when required.
• Providing feeding support according to parental wishes, including teaching and assisting with breast feeding, expressing and sterilising.
• Care of baby with Neonatal Jaundice undergoing phototherapy including collection of SBR blood samples and monitoring as per guideline.
• Performing blood tests on newborns for blood glucose monitoring and utilising the result to inform care planning.
• Undertaking oxygen saturation monitoring as appropriate.
• Providing parent education for the care of the newborn as appropriate.
