Job summary The Nurse Consultant will lead the provision and development of expert innovative and evidence based nursing care within the breast department at both a clinical and strategic level. The post holderwill act as an expert and collaborative advanced practitioner who will provide advice, education and support for patients, families and members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. A key emphasis of the role is to empower nursing staff to provide best practice for patients and to work as an effective role model. The Nurse Consultant works autonomously as a patient caseload holder and will provide a pathway to diagnosis and management. As an advanced practitioner the successful candidate would independently run one stop clinics, ensure appropriate referral for investigations, treatment and management will be facilitated and initiated. They will demonstrate clinical judgement and critical decision-making skills based upon evidence based practice, and will work collaboratively with consultants, ANPs, Breast Nurses and the wider multi-disciplinary team in order to meet the urgent care needs of patients. The post holder will frame their practice within the four sub roles of expert practice; professional leadership and consultancy. Main duties of the job The post holder will: Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate the provision of high-quality care for all patients attending the Breast Units diagnostic, one stop and family history clinics. Provide expert patient care with initial history taking, clinical assessment, ordering investigations and interpreting results within the rapid diagnostic and assessment unit. Act as an autonomous practitioner in managing and providing advice regarding benign breast conditions. Maintain the safe remote surveillance of Family History and Open Access patients. Provide appropriate and accurate telephone advice and support to patients who have previously undergone treatment for breast cancer or who may be an increased risk of developing the disease. Demonstrate safe critical decision-making in the clinical decision-making process and be able to initiate appropriate and timely response to patient reported cues.
