Background
The post holder will hold a Senior Research Fellow position, leading health economics and value proposition work within the recently awarded NIHR University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) HealthTech Research Centre (NIHR UHB HRC). The NIHR UHB HRC will deliver a national centre of excellence to support the translation of new healthcare technologies safely, effectively and efficiently into routine care for NHS patients and follow-on social care.
Companies approach us to help develop ideas for technology that they hope to take to market. One type of support we provide is health economic modelling – value of investment analysis. This analysis is particularly required when we seek to raise more money – at this point we need to explain the ‘value proposition’. This post will therefore create an outstanding opportunity for an economist to work at the interface of industry and academia. Thirty percent of the appointee’s time will be reserved to pursue a project of their choice in collaboration with the substantial health economic capacity in the College of Medicine and Health.
The post holder will be joining a vibrant and multidisciplinary research team based within the Department of Applied Health Research and work with the Department’s established team of health economists in the Health Economics Unit (HEU): https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/applied-health/research/healtheconomics/index.aspx.
Role Summary
* To be responsible and project manage high quality economic analysis and value proposition work that fall within the remit of the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre, including being the main point of contact for this workstream for external stakeholders and research collaborators.
* To pursue novel methodological questions and make a substantial methodological contribution to the field of supply-side health economics and technology-based health economic evaluations.
* Pursue own research ideas that fall within the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre and support protocol development for further grant applications.
* To write reports for the stakeholders; disseminating research results at academic and policy-relevant meetings and contributing to academic publications, effective media, research seminars and meetings.
* Supervise PhD students.
* Contribute to the Department/School through management/leadership.
* Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement activities.
Main Duties
To plan and carry out research, using appropriate health economics methodology and techniques:
* Work with the HealthTech Research Centre and industry partners.
* Pursue personal research including developing research ideas and winning support, including financial support.
* Plan, publish and/or execute high quality research.
* Project manage research activities, and/or supervise other research staff.
* Present findings in high quality publications and conference proceedings.
* Develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued.
* Supervise and examine PhD students, both within and out with the University.
* Provide expert advice to colleagues and students within discipline.
* Contribute to the administration/management of research across the Department/School.
* Develop and make substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University.
* Contribute to some administrative activities within the University, typically relating to research.
* Actively manage equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.
Person Specification
* PhD, preferably in Health Economics or Statistics.
* Extensive research experience and scholarship in quantitative research.
* Experience of project managing research to deliver high quality and impactful results.
* Experience of developing new research ideas.
* High level analytical capability.
* Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
* Ability to work to fixed deadlines.
* Ability to work as a member of a team and to be able to liaise with non-academic stakeholders.
