Job overview
Immanuel College is a Jewish independent day school located in Bushey within easy reach of North London. Focusing on outstanding pastoral development for its pupils, Immanuel provides a modern orthodox education in a supportive, family-orientated environment that aims to nurture and inspire in equal measure.
The Board of Governors has a highly ambitious vision for the school to become the leading Jewish school in the UK. Immanuel College will become known for its genuinely distinctive educational approach which provides individualised pathways for a diverse group of young people to excel across a range of opportunities which will inspire new generations of confident, creative and curious minds.
At this crucial time for the independent schools sector, the next Head will play a key role, working with the Board of Governors, in realising this bold vision which will secure a successful future for the College. The Head will be strategically and commercially minded as the facilitator of transformative change, working collaboratively and openly in a way which builds trust and confidence across the school and the wider school community.
This is an opportunity for a leader to truly shape and deliver a ground-breaking approach which challenges the educational norms of today. The preferred candidate will be brave, prepared to innovate and will bring a proven track record of successful change management in schools. A commitment to the values and ethos of the College and a collaborative and enabling style of leadership will also be key elements. The next Head of Immanuel is not required to be a member of the Jewish community although will need to work closely within it and in alignment with the school’s values and future ambitions.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020 and the School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare convictions and cautions (including those which are “spent” unless they are “protected” under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children. Immanuel College is an all-through, independent, mainstream school for students aged four to 18, located in Bushey, Hertfordshire. On the roll are 362 boys and 325 girls. This Jewish school was established in 1990 by the late Chief Rabbi Lord Immanuel Jokobovits.
The school is split into three sections: a preparatory school, for children aged four to 11; the senior section, for pupils aged 11 to 16; and a sixth form, for students aged 16 to 18.
Values and vision
When Lord Jokobovits created the school, his aim was to give children the best chance in life, offering them the best form of education in both Jewish and secular studies. He wanted students to be part of society by following the values of their faith.
Immanuel College values modesty and respect, believing that every child is equal within the school. It follows the Torah, aiming to develop children who “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with HaShem”. Teachers emphasise self-confidence, self-esteem and celebrate each individual pupil.
