Are you passionate about preserving archival records for the benefit of current and future generations?
The Keep operates as a partnership between East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council, and the University of Sussex. The Archive team cares for, preserves, and develops archive collections, as well as providing a high level of customer service for private and professional researchers accessing collections in person at our state-of-the-art facility or online. The East Sussex and Brighton and Hove Record Office team also ensure that we fulfill our statutory duty as a local authority to collect, preserve, and provide reasonable access to the records in our custody.
An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Archivist to work within our Archives team. With support from our Archivists, the post holder will ensure the timely appraisal and transfer of records from the East Sussex Record Centre in Eastbourne to The Keep, as well as contributing to other archival projects as they arise.
To help us continue to meet the needs of the Council’s services and departments, the standards required for Accredited Archive status, and the expectations of archive users and the public, we are seeking an enthusiastic, organised, and process-driven team member to work for the Archive in partnership with our Records Centre colleagues. The post holder will work within and suggest improvements to agreed processes for document appraisal and transfer to the Archive, within the parameters set by the ESCC retention schedule and relevant records management policies and legislation. The post-holder will also be responsible for accessioning and cataloguing records transferred into the Archive at The Keep from the Records Centre under the guidance of the Archivists, and ensuring the timely accession of statutory Public Records.
The role is ideally suited to a candidate who is newly or part-qualified as an archivist and wishes to gain experience in a local authority environment.
The successful candidate will:
* Demonstrate organisational skills and be able to work as part of a cross-departmental team to develop systems and processes for the benefit of both services.
* Show an ability to work on their own initiative and prioritise their work effectively, as well as take direction from senior, experienced, and qualified colleagues.
* Be a communicator, able to liaise with a range of internal stakeholders and external sources of public records.
Manual handling of documents and containers will be required, and candidates will need to demonstrate their ability to fulfil the travel requirements of the role, both to the role's work base at The Keep and to the Records Centre at Alder Close, Eastbourne.
To apply for the role, please complete and submit the application form before the closing date, detailing how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the person specification section of the attached job description.
Interviews will be held in person on 2 or 3 October at The Keep in Falmer.
We would love to hear from candidates who are interested in developing their career in archives in a unique partnership environment.
