Main duties of the job
* To collect blood samples from patients through venepuncture as requested by clinicians and other appropriately authorised doctors and health professionals.
* To collect blood samples safely with due respect to the dignity of patients and the needs of other clinical services.
* To ensure blood samples are collected in appropriate containers, labelled correctly, and prepared and dispatched to relevant laboratory sections in a timely and correct manner.
* To contribute to the provision of an efficient, high-quality service ensuring professional standards of those patients are maintained.
* To provide high-quality, timely, and effective phlebotomy services to all our patients.
About us
We are a busy GP practice based in Swinton, South Yorkshire, with over 9,450 patients. Our workforce includes 1 GP partner, 2 Salaried GPs, 4 GP Locums, 3 ANPs, 3 Practice Nurses, 1 Nurse Associate, and 1 HCA. We work collaboratively with our PCN Wentworth 1 and we have additional ARRS staff which include: ACP, Paramedics, Nurse Associates, Social Prescribing Link Workers, Clinical Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Physiotherapists, Care Co-Ordinators, and Mental Health Nurses. Our clinical system is SystmOne (TPP).

JOB TITLE: PHLEBOTOMIST
REPORTS TO: PRACTICE NURSE LEAD
HOURS: PART TIME (20-25 HOURS, MON - FRI)
Job summary
The post holder must be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team, to have the ability to organise and prioritise their own workload on a day-to-day basis and always observe strict rules about confidentiality. They must also know the limits of their own capabilities and seek direction from a Practice Nurse, ANP, GP, or Practice Manager.
Working under the supervision of the practice nursing team and strictly in accordance with specific practice or national guidelines and protocols, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner.
Main responsibilities
* To manage phlebotomy clinics efficiently and accurately.
* Collection of samples of blood in accordance with training and procedures.
* Ensuring correct handling and storage of the samples and appropriate delivery of the samples to the laboratory.
* Checking patient identification accurately to ensure you have the correct patient.
* Accurate legible labelling of all the samples referring to our SOP.
* Ensure pre and post-test requirements have been observed.
* Recording collection of samples in the patient record in accordance with practice procedures.
* Ensuring any anomalies are reported to the Lead Nurse or Practice Manager.
* To inform GP/Nurse of any significant patient issues.
* Participate in day-to-day management of stock control and ordering of supplies to ensure we have enough stock to deliver the service efficiently.

* Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory/contractual/professional requirements, and good practice guidelines.
* Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage, and transport arrangements.
* Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice, including provision, ordering, availability, and ongoing correct usage by staff.
* Knowledge of hand hygiene.
* Active observation of current working practices across the practice in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followed.
* Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage, and disposal.
* Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean, and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial/corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management.
* Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised.
* Keeping own work areas and general/patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards/risks in relation to other work areas within the business, and assuming responsibility in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (where appropriate) with other sector managers.
* Spillage control procedures, management, and training.
* Decontamination control procedures, management, and training, and equipment maintenance.

Experience
* Direct patient care experience working in a healthcare setting.
* To be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team.

* Experience in working in a GP practice.
Qualifications
* Good IT skills to be able to input data on systems and utilise email.
* SystmOne user.
* Educated to GCSE Standard or Equivalent.
