An exciting opportunity to appoint an enthusiastic, flexible, experienced ophthalmic nurse, to join our forward thinking, progressive nursing team. The post holder will be one of the Team Leaders responsible and accountable for the continuous day to day clinical management of the unit. The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patients receive optimum care.
To lead by example as an expert practitioner in the delivery of high standards of nursing care and be an excellent role model, providing support and motivation to the team.
This position requires experience and clinical insight into Ophthalmology and your role will require you to work closely alongside the other Sister/charge nurse and demonstrate leadership qualities and experience; this is key to the success of the department and your role.
The post holder will support the Matron in developing the service and meeting the requirements of Care Quality Commission.
The post holder will be required to work with our existing Ophthalmology Team based mainly at Ashford Hospital but not exclusively as the Ophthalmology service runs from SPH and Woking Community Hospital.

* Act as a preceptor/facilitator/mentor for staff and students.

Clinical Governance Responsibilities:
* Ensure team members assess, plan and implement care and treatment for patients.

* Ensure team members plan and co-ordinate patients’ discharge from the Eye Ward effectively.
* Demonstrate accountability of completeness of the nursing record/documentation for every visit/appointment.
* Supervise staff in the delivery of care and treatments.
* Act as an advocate for the patient, providing them with information and directing them to the relevant support services where appropriate.
* Take the appropriate action to address any issues or risks.

* Promote and maintain a patient focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, health care professionals and other agencies.
* Ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that multidisciplinary team members are informed of changes in the patient’s condition.
* Ensure safe and timely transfer of patients in accordance with ASPH policy.

* Ensure a clean and safe environment and liaise with the Associate Director of Nursing/Service Manager Senior Nurse /Matron with regard to the performance management of contracted services and NHS National Cleaning Standards.
* Uphold quality initiatives that improve ‘customer care’ and enhance the interface between staff, patients and visitors and other wards and departments within the trust.
* Participate in audit processes for monitoring and reviewing nursing quality.
* Participate in the “Essence of Care” Benchmarking process and implementation of action plans.
* Be involved in the handling and resolution of complaints in accordance with ASPH policy; ensure staff are aware of the role of the nurse.
