Management
Provide professional leadership to the ECPs within the service and to work at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Councils (NMC) Professional Code of Conduct for nurses or HCPC equivalent, taking accountability for own professional action and ensuring that all ECPs within the service do the same. To be responsible for the quality and standard of nursing care in the Urgent Treatment Centre. Implement the divisional recruitment and retention plan to ensure that the workforce is in place to meet the needs of our patients and services. Manage staffing on a day to day and long term basis to ensure effective use of resources. This includes responsibility for the duty rotas, annual and study leave, bank and agency usage. Updates will need to be provided to the service manager for London Central and West (LCW).
Minimise the use for bank and agency staff by relocation of staff as needed to cover rota effectively. Conduct PDRs for the ECP team in the directorate ensuring that they reflect the needs of the division and their own personal professional development. Investigate any issues of conduct, discipline and performance within their areas, in accordance with trust policies and procedures, in liaison with the Lead Nurse and LCW. Supports mental well-being of staff and make referral if required.
Maintain pay and non-pay budgets within agreed controls and contribute to cost improvement programmes and initiatives. Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents for the area in liaison with the Divisional Risk Manager, Lead Nurse and Service Manager for LCW. Collect data and provide essential information in a timely and accurate manner as requested by the directorate and trust management teams.
This could include dependency studies, manpower and a variety of audits. To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and in liaison with the pharmacy team. Ensure that department teams are aware of trust policies and procedures and know how to access the latest versions. Disseminate any changes in policy and procedures in a timely manner.
Work within these policies. To participate in meetings and project work as identified and delegated by the Lead Nurse, LCW, operational managers and Divisional Director of Nursing. Deputise and act up for the Lead Nurse if required. To investigate and respond to informal and formal complaints in a timely manner encouraging an open and learning environment.
To monitor all incidents that occur within the directorate and supports the completion of any root cause analysis or investigation. To manage any changes in practice or learning identified through incident reviews. Responsible for complying with legal and professional confidentiality guidelines at all times. Attend London Central and West unscheduled Care Collaborative clinical team meetings.
Communication
Act as the focal point for communications on the nursing service ensuring effective communication to all internal and external stakeholders. Establish an effective meetings and communication structure for the nursing team that supports 2-way communication between clinical, operational and management team and implement. Facilitate collaboration and joint working across the service. Be able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information where it may be necessary to persuade or negotiate using empathetic or re-assurance skills. Act as clinical champion for the nursing team for Planned and Unplanned Care.
Clinical/Professional Role
To act as a role model of expert clinical practice and demonstrate expertise in the delivery of treatments for minor injuries and illness and maintain appropriate level of clinical competence to lead on service delivery. Responsible for gaining valid, informed consent for assessment and treatment interventions, sharing of information following legal and professional guidelines and to follow these guidelines in circumstances where clients do not have capacity to provide informed consent. Administer simple analgesia, antibiotics, anti-emetics and other emergency medications under Patient Group Directives or prescribes within the individuals scope of practice if a Registered Non-Medical prescriber.
Accurately order and interpret a range of x-rays, with reference to local and national protocols and guidelines. Ensures safety mechanism i.e. patient follow-up if reports are abnormal or requiring further review. To work closely with carers and relatives to ensure individualised patient-centred care is provided.
Also, provide expert guidance regarding wellness, lifestyle, disease risks and potential changes in health status. Undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy. Within their sphere of competence, each member of staff is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children, young people and / or vulnerable adults for whom they are responsible or may come into contact with, in the job role. To obtain patient and relative feedback by undertaking clinical rounds with the aim of providing excellent standards of care.
To ensure that the ECP and nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard and to ensure that appropriate audits of documentation are completed. Be a competent user of and participate in the on-going development of the Electronic Patient Record. To work in close liaison with other members of the multidisciplinary team. Promote and maintain an evidence-based practice culture for nursing staff for the updating and review of service treatment protocols and guidelines as agreed at the Clinical Quality Group and the implementation of NICE guidelines.
To promote clinical supervision in the UTC and departments within the Trusts strategy. To ensure high standards of care are given to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators outcome measures. Advise patients on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness. To liaise with other departments in the hospital e.g. Estates, Facilities, Finance, IT, to ensure that services supplied are of an acceptable standard and problems identified are registered and addressed.
On-going or serious problems will be notified to the line manager. To manage conflict promptly and effectively, supporting and promoting effective working relationships within the multidisciplinary team and initiating and evaluation any action plans. To ensure that COSHH and Infection Control policies are implemented and that every effort is made to identify and minimise potential risks/hazards.
Educational Role
To identify educational needs of all members of staff by reviewing PDRs regularly. Work in close liaison with Operational leads and Practice Development Nurse and other educational staff to implement and audit benchmarking processes and implement improvement strategies. Ensure that all new staff receive an appropriate induction and welcome to the department. To ensure that each ward is a suitable learning environment for the education of student nurses, nurse apprentices and trainee nurse associates. Organise and participate in educational activities (e.g. teaching programmes) within the clinical area. Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to the specialty as required. Lead for ensuring safe handling and management of equipment in area of responsibility.
Professional Development
To participate in own performance development review, developing and actioning a Personal Development Plan (PDP) in liaison with the Lead Nurse. Proactively keep up to date with current developments in nursing practise and ensure the delivery of evidence based practice. To attend appropriate educational programmes to develop own self and team in accordance with the needs of the service. To adhere at all times to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and any other NMC guidelines and regulations. This job description may be subject to change according to the varying needs of the service. Such changes will be made after discussion between the post holder and his/her manager.
All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure. You must never undertake any duties that are outside your area of skill or knowledge level. If you are unsure you must seek clarification from a more senior member of staff.
