Title: Mechanical Integrity Methods Engineer Title: Mechanical Integrity Methods Engineer Salary range: £40,000 to £50,000 per annum depending on experience Location: Burton, Glasgow, Bristol, Gloucester, Leatherhead, Manchester or Plymouth Working Pattern: We operate a flexible hybrid working pattern at Frazer-Nash, with time split between the office, client sites and working from home. We are inviting applicants to join our Asset Integrity team. We work as a collaborative and supportive team to develop and implement novel analytical methods and solutions to mechanical engineering problems across a range of high-tech sectors, from renewables to new nuclear fission and fusion, from defence to power generation and rotating machinery. Our core capabilities are built on a deep understanding of the dynamic and static responses of structures and extend to detailed methods for predicting failure and performance, making the most of our learning from across a range of industries. We love working on new problems, learning the latest computational and statistical methods to expand our capabilities and services, and building on the wide-ranging knowledge held across the team and the wider company. Recent work includes development of structural digital twins, dynamic analysis and code assessments of components for nuclear reactors, multi-physics design and modelling of components in nuclear fusion reactors, and rotor dynamic failure analysis. We are looking for enthusiastic engineers to join our team with a good grasp of the underlying physics and processes behind how components, systems and analytical methods work. We are interested in your prior experience, but most important is an aptitude and a willingness to get stuck in and be comfortable (or even excited) by learning and developing new methods and skills as you go, building on both your own experience and that of the team. Our projects are very diverse and can last from a few weeks to many years of sustained support. You will typically be involved in multiple projects at any one time. You will meet and communicate with customers to understand their requirements and develop an approach to deliver the desired outcomes and insights. You will be involved in leading, delivering, and verifying a diverse range of rewarding and worthwhile projects which assess the structural response of a range of components/assets. You will use a variety of methods from hand calculations to complex finite element analysis (FEA). You could write bespoke software tools to model components and systems more quickly, or in more detail, utilising software processes and tools such as Azure DevOps. You will apply critical thinking, and scientific and engineering knowhow to help our clients develop new cutting-edge structural modelling methods and designs. Although primarily a technical role, you will be joining a consultancy where we expect you’ll be able to work across our business by engaging with clients, holding and maintaining those relationships and developing future services and capabilities to help win new work. In time you will become responsible for defining the appropriate technical solution and approach to a client’s problem, writing bids to communicate this to the customer along with the commercial solution, and managing the technical delivery of the work. We’re looking for individuals with a mix of curiosity and creativity and with a good foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles. If you think this could be you, please get in contact including a CV and cover letter tailored to this role. More specifically, we are looking for applicants with some of the following: Curiosity, creativity, and good technical understanding in the mechanical / structural engineering domain, comfortable working from first principles. A degree in engineering, physics (with a focus on mechanical or material behaviour) or equivalent. BEng/MEng, MSc. A PhD could be an advantage. Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) (preferably Ansys, Abaqus or LS Dyna). Familiar with programming languages and packages such as Python or MATLAB. Experience designing or analysing electrical machines. An aptitude for communicating methods and results to specialists and non-specialists through writing high quality reports and delivering presentations. Be a strong team player but with the ability to direct and manage your own work. Experience in writing proposals, client liaison and business development. Experience of project management. Be Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status. Some experience of working with codes and standards, such as ASME III, ASME VIII, API579, BS7608, BS7910, R5/R6, Eurocode, etc. Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
