The Technical Team in the School of Life and Medical Sciences supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Sports Science, Psychology, and Geography, Environment and Planning. Highly skilled technical staff are organised into small specialist teams, who work together alongside academic and research staff. This Senior Technical Officer (Geography, Environment and Planning) will be primarily based at Bayfordbury Field Station, which is a 50-hectare site, located just outside Hertford.
Main duties and responsibilities
1. Prepare materials and equipment for practical classes, projects, field trips, and field courses within the areas of Geography and Environmental Sciences, including plant growth facilities.
2. Be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the plant growth facilities at Bayfordbury, including glasshouses and outdoor experimental areas.
3. Work directly with students, staff, and researchers demonstrating safe laboratory practice, specialist laboratory skills, and use of field equipment.
4. Provide specialist and general assistance to help students, staff, and researchers complete their work.
5. Maintain and operate laboratory and field equipment, arrange for repairs where necessary, and maintain stock levels.
6. Keep an inventory of equipment, maintenance logs, and records required to comply with licenses, authorizations, and regulations.
Skill and experience required
You will have proven experience of working in a bioscience, plant pathology, or geography/environment area, in a technical role. An ability to deal with conflicting priorities and work under pressure is essential. An articulate and good communicator, you will be both reliable and a team player, as well as showing initiative and being able to work independently when necessary.
You will be flexible to team and workload requirements, adaptable and reliable with a proactive approach which is methodical with attention to detail.
Qualifications required
Educated with an HND/degree/NVQ Level 4 in a bioscience, plant pathology, or geography/environment subject, or equivalent in-service experience and education.
