Job overview
Critical Care in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting period of redevelopment, having attracted national investment to deliver a critical care hub for Kent and Medway. We have recently moved to a new 24-bed purpose-built unit which boasts excellent facilities for both patients and staff, including:
* Hi-fidelity simulation suite within the ICU.
* Regular protected teaching which maps the FICM syllabus.
Our team has a burgeoning research portfolio, including high-profile national studies. We work closely with other specialties and offer opportunities to combine specialisms. We offer a forward-thinking approach to flexible working and portfolio careers.
Main duties of the job
This post can be honed to meet the requirements of a CT3 training post, as detailed by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, following the 2021 RCoA curriculum. For service provision, there will be full involvement in the on-call rota, covering CEPOD theatre cases, obstetric cases, pPCI cases, ITU support, ED and ward emergencies, and resuscitation for paediatric and adult patients. There is a consultant presence out of hours, until 10pm, with distant supervision after this time, if the workload allows.
The job will include the pre, peri and post-operative management of surgical patients, including acute pain reviews. There is also an expectation that the successful candidate will be able to safely transfer critically ill patients between departments, sites, and other hospital trusts. Learning and training opportunities will be offered in a wide variety of surgical specialties, including complex airway cases and regional anaesthesia and obstetrics.
The post-holder will be expected to communicate effectively with all other medical and service departments within the Trust and other hospitals. They will be involved in the teaching of other junior doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals as part of the anaesthetic clinical team. Other educational roles can be supported. There is an opportunity to become involved in the preassessment service and multidisciplinary meetings for a variety of surgical specialties.
