The main purpose of the role is to support and assist Architecture and Civil Engineering students in the construction of models under the supervision of the senior technician in the Model Making workshop. These models are made from a variety of materials, which are cut using various hand and power tools, plus the use of high precision machines such as laser cutters and 3D printers. On site training will be given where necessary, especially in how to program the high precision machines and how the characteristics of each program affect the outcome. They will be responsible for stock levels of materials and keeping the workshop in a clean and ready condition. Students in this area have to purchase materials for their work, the post holder will learn and use the WorldPay system for these transactions.
The post holder will also assist in applying the Health and Safety regulations for anyone in the workshop. Overall they will be part of an extensive technical team across the School and will work alongside other technicians in other areas, building up a diverse knowledge of the technical support needed to successfully support staff and students through their education and research work.
About the person:
They should be in possession of an OND/ONC or NVQ level 3 in a relevant subject and have 2 years work experience in a workshop environment, using hand and power tools and working with other staff. They should:
1. Have a good understanding of the use of tools and associated processes of using correct tools for the correct job.
2. Have a good understanding of Health & Safety regulations.
3. Be computer literate and in the use of MS Office 365.
4. Have good communication skills, which is essential in this environment.
5. Be able to demonstrate equipment and techniques.
6. Work with minimal supervision.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
