About the role
Paydock is seeking a Head of Legal to join our remote global team.
As a valued member of the team, you'll report directly to the co-CEO - Simon Lenton. You will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing all legal matters and ensuring compliance within the rapidly growing payments industry. You will play a critical role in shaping the company's legal strategy and providing expert guidance to support business operations.

How you will make an impact:
Head of Legal has the following responsibilities and duties:
* Manage compliance matters around all regulatory and legal requirements and ensuring policies and processes reflect this
* Guide the business on where any policies or processes need updating to reflect new regulations or improved compliance practice internally
* Be proactive in seeking and identifying any scenarios which may present any significant risk to the business
* Act as a trusted advisor to local management, business, finance and HR teams as well as other cross-functional stakeholders globally.
* Provide legal support in relation to various corporate matters, including company secretarial support, corporate governance, policies and EU/UK employment related matters.
* Provide legal support related to EU/UK data protection and privacy.
* Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of corporate and commercial documents and agreements, including world-first software licensing agreements, professional services agreements, consulting agreements, employment agreements, partnership agreements, data processing addendums, policies and engagements with financial institutions.
* Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on legal matters, and collaborate with business, operations, finance, treasury, tech and other teams within Paydock to achieve execution
* Stay up to date with applicable laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact Paydock and share such learnings with relevant stakeholders
* Support the continuous creation and improvement of standard form agreements and templates
* Be proficient in dealing with basic numeracy tasks and calculations including pricing models, SLA formulae and basic tax structures.
How you will add value:
Head of Legal should have the following skills, education and experience:
* Fully qualified lawyer with excellent academic credentials (qualified in the UK or another EU country) and with at least 7 years of PQE at a reputable (ideally top tier or magic circle) law firm
* Prior experience working in-house within the legal department
* Prior experience in a similar role in the financial services industry (and ideally in payments).
* Strong working knowledge of legal compliance in the UK & Australia - including knowledge of AML, payments services and e-money regulations, data protection, TCF and the FCA handbook
* Excellent understanding of corporate governance, contract law, intellectual property, and data privacy
* Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide practical and strategic legal advice in world-first contexts.
* Solid knowledge of data protection regulations, including GDPR and ISO27001 desirable
* Collaborative team player experienced at working with cross-functional teams across multiple jurisdictions and with flexibility to align with colleagues in different time zones
* Strong Project Management skills and disciplines with a demonstrated capacity for driving major legal operations transformation projects.
* Exceptional English professional language skills, strong communication skills and ability to explain complex legal concepts thoroughly and succinctly to a range of stakeholders.
* Ability to proactively identify relevant business and legal issues, evaluate the risks and suggest creative solutions all the while maintaining a strong peripheral view of any relevant associated legal issues.
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment
* Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and to take ownership of projects and tasks
* A strong sense of personal accountability
* Experience managing external legal counsel and budget management.
