Job overview
This is a new post for a consultant in Infection (microbiology or microbiology and infectious diseases), developed in collaboration with North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The post will provide clinical infection services across Bristol for both NBT and the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). The post will primarily be based at NBT working within Severn Infection Sciences (SIS), but there would be an expectation that a successful candidate would provide clinical services across three campuses served by SIS, namely NBT, Bristol Royal Infirmary, and Weston General Hospital (WGH). The successful applicant would join a team of established consultants in infection and is funded to deliver 10PAs. The funding for the post is divided between NBT (5.5PAs) and UKHSA (4.5PAs), with managerial responsibilities for the post being with NBT. Out-of-hours the post holder would be expected to provide clinical support for both NBT and WGH.
Applicants should hold Full Registration with the GMC. They should be on the GMC’s Specialist Register or be able to demonstrate that their expected date of receipt of CCT will be within 6 months of the date of the interview for this post. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.
The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.
Main duties of the job
The clinical activities will be divided between NBT and UHBW based on funding (55% from NBT and 45% from UKHSA).
During clinical activities the post holder would be expected to:
1. Take part in the activities of analytical microbiology, and clinical consultation and infection control services.
2. Promote infection control practice and be a site-specific Infection Prevention and Control Doctor when providing clinical service.
3. Take part in the routine workload of the department across all sites as outlined, dividing their time flexibly and equitably with their colleagues.
4. Oversee junior medical staff who are shared between services, as staffing allows.
5. Take a proactive role in delivering the clinical infection service, sharing continuous responsibility for the care of patients in liaison with clinical consultant colleagues.
6. Have continuing responsibility for activities so designated in liaison with consultant colleagues and others, and in line with departmental policies (subject to periodic amendment) for the proper function of Medical Microbiology and Infection Control.
7. Participate in constructing policies for the Trust as required.
8. Participate in the out-of-hours service for NBT and WGH and surrounding area served. Currently this is a 1:8 (with inclusive cover) on-call commitment.
9. Provide prospective cover for the other consultant colleagues' periods of leave. Reciprocal cover will be provided for the appointee.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post provides clinical infection services for both NBT and UHBW, and the populations in Bristol and Weston that they serve. In addition, the post holder would be expected to take up an additional lead role within the department. Initially, this will be the role of training lead for infection, however, all roles are on a rotational basis. The post holder would also have opportunities to develop a new role and be the link for providing educational activities related to infection, and the correct use of laboratory services across the Bristol Hospitals. In addition, there would be opportunities to develop the existing model of service delivery and cross-site working.
Person specification
Qualifications and Registration
* FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification.
* Full and Specialist registration (and with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* Ideally CCT (or equivalent) should be in Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
* Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD, PhD, or MSc).
* MRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification.
* DTM&H or other relevant qualification.
Training and Experience
* Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
* Minimum of 6 years postgraduate experience including higher training. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
* Training in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infective conditions.
* Experience in a leadership role for in an acute NHS Trust.
* HIS hospital infection control course.
* PgCert in medical education.
Further Training, Management, Audit
* Experience in audit and report writing.
* Evidence of recent CME/reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
* Experience in audit projects and quality improvement.
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
* Knowledge of political context within which we operate.
* Completion of a general management course or programme.
Research, Teaching, Publications
* Proven teaching ability.
* Willingness to undertake teaching of medical undergraduates & postgraduates.
* Interest in research / quality improvement.
* Willingness to undertake further research.
* Peer-reviewed publications.

* Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels.
