Role summary and primary responsibilities
The senior project engineer owns the technical aspects of key or complex projects and is accountable for ensuring that the team delivers the technical scope of the project on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The senior project engineer works cross functionally and brings the team together to define the overall technical programme to ensure that the technical team, from design through to manufacturing, delivers exciting products that meet the customer’s needs.
The senior project engineer is the product lead and owner of the product roadmap who has overall responsibility for the product portfolio. Collaborating closely with the Business Development team to understand the market and the customer pull, the senior project engineer looks strategically at what product development is needed over the next 5 years to maintain IrvinGQ’s world-leading market position.
Senior Project engineers are involved in the delivery of projects that span from pure R&D through to through-life Post Design Services (PDS) customer support. You are a leader, bringing together a team to deliver high-quality, mission-critical capability when customers need it, in an environment where there are no second chances. The role will also require engineering leadership during the preparation of bids and proposals, generating the solution to meet a customer requirement and estimating the work involved.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
* 10+ years’ experience in engineering design and manufacturing
* Engineering bachelor’s degree or equivalent
* An effective decision maker who can lead technical teams to deliver consistently high-quality results
* Analytical approach to problem solving combined with a drive to deliver products that are not “just like everybody else”
* Able to coordinate cross-functional project teams, including engineering, production engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain, to ensure project deliverables and milestones are met
* Ability to prepare, review and approve technical documentation ensuring accuracy and compliance
* Able to coach and mentor others
* Proactive in the identification and capture of new business
* Comfortable working under pressure and with conflicting priorities
* Adaptable and biased to action, solution-focused and knows how to get the best from the team
* Experience of certification/qualification testing
* Able to remain objective, always acting with integrity and honesty
Advantageous skills and experience
* Experience in a regulated industry, such as defence, medical, automotive, etc.
* Experience of CAD tools, including Autodesk Inventor
* Strong communication with experience of project management tools
* Knowledge of a variety of engineering design processes and methodologies, including waterfall/V-cycle and agile, iterative approaches.
* Experience of product and/or technology road mapping
* Free-thinking and innovative, always looking for a way to make customers’ lives better
* Experience of continuous improvement projects
Other Considerations
* Able to hold a UK SC security clearance
* UK driving license
* Willingness and ability to travel within the UK and overseas
