Job Description
A vacancy has arisen for the above position reporting to the Portfolio Manager within our clients Projects Department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leadership of a team of Project Managers and the co-ordination of project management activity across several projects and programmes, taking a lead in bid activity. The successful candidate should possess a proven track record in successful delivery of complex projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Successfully manage a portfolio of similar or related projects for a business stream, providing effective leadership of Project Managers to achieve customer requirements along with meeting the business goals of schedule, budget, deliveries, risk management, sales, margin, and winning new/follow on business.
Manage all customer interfaces, and communicate effectively to Senior Management, team members and peers to establish a common understanding of programme performance and plan for successful programme execution.
Work closely with the Program Finance team to meet key financial objectives and ensure clear and accurate financial reporting.
Prioritise, co-ordinate and plan the project portfolio activities to achieve all agreed business objectives and delivery milestones.
Provide an escalation route for project issues, risks and key decisions.
Personally manage large / higher profile / complex projects as required.
Lead the preparation of bids, including the provision of accurate cost and schedule information.
Provide oversight and governance to ensure effective project planning, programme execution, evaluation and management of project risks, accurate progress reporting, and adherence to project management processes and project gate reviews.
Motivate the team by communicating a shared vision, providing direction, setting goals and mentoring, creating a team environment that encourages people to work towards common objectives.
Liaise with other functional leads within the business to enable strong cross-functional communication and joint decision-making.
Support the Supply Chain team in identification, management and development of key sub-contracts and suppliers.
Deputise for the Senior Director Programs as required.
Identify resource requirements and conduct interviews and assessments to ensure effective recruitment and selection processes.
Responsible for management, leading and coaching of team members.
Conduct annual appraisals with team members, setting objectives to ensure performance standards are met or improved.
Conduct regular one to one meetings with team members to discuss workload, progress, training and development needs and address performance issues.
Identify training and development needs for staff and action training requests as required to expand their skills, aligning their needs with the business strategy and regulatory requirements.
Encourage the sharing and retention of knowledge and experience within the business through effective mentoring of team members and colleagues.
Formulate effective succession plans and review regularly to ensure the skills and knowledge required to fulfil key roles are met through continuous training, development and mentoring in line with OSDP requirements.
Carry out other duties that may reasonably be required by the Senior Director Programs in support of department activities.
Qualifications / Skills Required:
Experienced Programme Manager with a successful track record in setting up and executing full lifecycle product development.
Educated to degree level in Business/Engineering.
Knowledge and practical experience of best practice in Project Management techniques.
Previous experience within a comparable role within a similar industry.
Previous experience of successfully leading and managing a team.
Experience of the commercial elements of project management, including managing contracts and supporting bids & proposals.
Ability to solve complex problems effectively, demonstrating a proactive approach.
Ability to liaise with both internal and external customers and key stakeholders.
Ability to make effective decisions under pressure and apply sound judgement at all times.
Excellent leadership, delegation and teamwork skills.
Excellent communication, influencing and persuading skills.
High commercial and business awareness, customer focus and sales orientation.
PC and keyboard literate and working knowledge of project management tools, plus working knowledge of IFS or an equivalent ERP system.
APM Chartered Project Professional or equivalent qualification is desirable.
A background in the Defence industry is desirable, particularly experience of working within SSRO regulations.
Experience of managing multi-disciplined projects with a focus on systems engineering and integration is highly desirable.
