Band 5 Orthoptist / Band 6 Specialist Orthoptist (Depending on Experience - Newly Qualified Orthoptists are welcome to apply)
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Orthoptist to join our friendly and professional Orthoptic and Optometry Team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, with cross-site working at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford when required.
We are seeking to appoint an Orthoptist to work in both specialist orthoptic clinics and extended roles within ophthalmology clinics.
You must have current HCPC registration and be a qualified Orthoptist, along with excellent interpersonal skills, a team focus and the ability to deliver a high standard of patient care.
The successful candidate will provide a broad range of highly skilled core and specialised services in clinics including paediatrics, literacy difficulties, contact lenses, stroke and low vision. Training and support can be provided in the role as required.
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing comprehensive, high quality Orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner, requiring accuracy and acute observations, taking into account the interpretation of a broad range of specialised clinical options.
2. Working as an effective member of a multidisciplinary cross-site team in the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with ocular motility disorders, binocular vision disorders and amblyopia.
3. Developing and monitoring effective treatment plans using specialist skills based on clinical and analytical reasoning and using evidence-based practice.
4. Carrying out Orthoptic vision screening in school reception classes.
5. Participating in the clinical supervision and teaching of undergraduate Orthoptic students, medical students, Ophthalmic nurses, optometrists and other health professionals as required.
6. Contributing to departmental audit and research projects.
7. Carrying out visual field perimetry.
8. Maintaining and enhancing professional knowledge and skills required to practise as an orthoptist and keep a personal professional development portfolio.
9. Developing post-qualification clinical skills in conjunction with and under the supervision of Senior Orthoptists.
10. Investigating, treating and managing patients within a specialist extended role/s.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust has recently undergone an £800k major redevelopment of the Eye Department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where you will be based, with modern facilities in which to deliver excellent ophthalmic care for our patients. The new facility has new furniture and equipment that supports staff and patients.
