Job Title: Estimator Location: Hertfordshire (Office-based with occasional site visits) Contract Type: Permanent / Full-Time Salary: Competitive, based on experience About the Role We are seeking a skilled and experienced Estimator to join our pre-construction team based in Hertfordshire. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5–10 years’ experience in estimating or operational roles within civil engineering, covering sectors such as shafts, tunnelling, pipelines, MEICA, rail civils, and groundworks. As an Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing competitive and compliant tender submissions, working closely with operational teams, clients, and supply chain partners to ensure accurate pricing and effective risk management. Key Responsibilities Prepare detailed cost estimates and tender submissions across multiple civil engineering disciplines. Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and scope documents to build accurate cost breakdowns. Liaise with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers to gather and assess pricing information. Identify risks, opportunities, and value engineering options in collaboration with operational teams. Contribute to post-tender negotiations and handovers to project delivery teams. Maintain and update estimating databases, rate libraries, and supplier contacts. Attend tender review meetings, client briefings, and occasional site visits as required.Requirements 5–10 years’ experience in estimating or site-based roles within one or more of the following sectors: Shafts and tunnelling Pipeline installation MEICA (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation) Rail civils Groundworks Solid understanding of construction methods and resource requirements in civil engineering. Proficient in preparing tender build-ups and BOQs. Strong numeracy skills and experience using estimating software (e.g., Conquest, Candy, Causeway, etc.). Competent in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.). Strong communication and interpersonal skills – confident liaising with colleagues, clients, and suppliers.
