We are looking to recruit a Band 4 Phlebotomy Supervisor to expand our team working across Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital, Southend University Hospital, and other local community clinics throughout South Essex.
Main duties of the job
As a Phlebotomy Supervisor, you will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of phlebotomy staff in outpatients, wards, and the community (including domiciliary).
You will be expected to work across all sites; shifts are variable between 6.15am and 7pm, Monday to Friday, with regular weekends on a rotational basis.
This role is ideally suited for someone who is experienced, caring, and friendly and would like to be a part of a team that contributes towards patient care. You will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work and communicate with a large team across multiple sections.
A full driving license and access to your own vehicle is essential, as you will be required to travel to various community clinic locations. Successful applicants will undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Job responsibilities
1. To be responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the Phlebotomy staff.
2. To provide & control an efficient service, ensuring that appropriate staffing levels & professional standards are maintained at all times within the team.
3. To be responsible for liaising and communicating in a timely & effective manner with all Phlebotomy staff as well as other internal & external users of department services.
4. To be responsible for identifying and resolving issues & errors within Phlebotomy, including initially dealing with routine disciplinary matters or any issues arising with other staff members and, as appropriate, supporting the Phlebotomy Manager to resolve issues or errors that arise.
5. To participate in the monitoring of change & implement any improvement to develop service needs.
6. To maintain & be responsible for the following staffing areas in accordance with Department & iPP Policies & Procedures to ensure Quality standards are adhered to, including documentation:
7. Complete and monitor sickness absence and conduct return to work interviews, assisting Phlebotomy manager with absence management.
8. Appraisals, performance, personal objectives, and development reviews.
9. Mandatory training and other appropriate courses.
10. Provide constructive feedback regarding performance.
11. Provide support and advice for the development of individuals and teams.
12. To be responsible for ensuring all staff, including casual staff & trainees, are trained appropriately & training records (competencies) are maintained.
13. To ensure effective and timely communication to all staff on all aspects of the department, including team briefs, ensuring any such communication is relevant, current & documented.
14. To be responsible for authorising annual leave for staff ensuring the area is adequately staffed at all times.
15. To be responsible for compiling the weekly, evening, weekend & Bank Holiday duty rotas on a four-weekly basis, allocate staff to shifts and to ensure service needs are met at all times.
16. To be responsible for the entry & retrieval of data relating to own area and providing any data requests in an appropriate format.
17. To maintain & modify the following Health & Safety documentation in accordance with UKAS (ISO 15189 standards), Department & iPP Policies & Procedures keeping up to date records on Q Pulse:

22. DSE Assessments.
23. Departmental & Cross Department Audits.
24. Weekly, Monthly & Quarterly Safety Tours of all Phlebotomy Clinics.
25. To support the Phlebotomy Manager & Quality Manager in the investigation of any incidents, complaints, etc.
26. The post holder will actively participate in Internal Audit of the Phlebotomy Service Department.
27. To resolve any Safety and Security and Quality matters and attend Pathology departmental meetings as and when required.
28. To ensure patient confidentiality is adhered to at all times.
29. Ensure standards of cleanliness, waste disposal are complied with in line with iPP policies.
30. To undertake any training, courses, etc. as deemed appropriate.
31. To perform any additional duties consistent with the grade and description of the post as may be required.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* 3 GCSE O levels or equivalent which must include English.
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience.
Experience
* A minimum of 12 months previous phlebotomy experience.
* Paediatric experience.
* Domiciliary experience.
* Basic CPR and First Aid Knowledge and competency.
