An opportunity has arisen to join our Surgical Admissions and pre-operative assessment service. Training and mentoring will be provided to support you in reaching your goals. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high standards of individualised care for the people who use our services, whilst always maintaining their privacy and dignity. The post holder will undertake clinical duties delivering the highest quality service for patients on a day-to-day basis. The job role involves working in Surgical Admissions and pre-assessment.
You will need to be able to risk assess and escalate if outside of your scope of practice. This is an exciting time to be involved in pre-operative assessment as the role is developing nationwide and there will be training modules available in association with GIRFT and opportunity for professional development.
You must be enthusiastic and motivated. Must be able to demonstrate that you work well within a team and can also prioritise and work autonomously with a keen desire to become a competent pre-assessment practitioner.
The staff nurse or ODP in POAC is responsible for the pre-operative assessment of adult patients having a planned surgical procedure for their fitness for general anaesthetic and surgery within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be responsible for patient-centred assessments which includes liaising with patients, their carers, and the multi-disciplinary team.
1. To be able to undertake nurse led pre-assessment on patients undergoing elective surgery for all specialities, provide health promotion advice and ensure that written information relating to the surgery is given.
2. Patient is optimised for surgery and risks are identified and action taken. This involves screening of patients ensuring that they are fit for surgery and escalating when necessary.
3. Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within pre-assessment, surgical admissions and with relevant multidisciplinary team.
4. When working in the Surgical Admissions Unit to help ensure the smooth running of the department and the timely arrival of patients to theatre, liaising with the multi-disciplinary team and other departments on a daily basis following guidelines and protocol.
