Our Mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.
We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.
We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.
What to Expect
As an Advanced Systems Engineer with Human Factors, you will join our Vehicle Management Systems team based in Bristol. You'll play a key part in the design, development and integration of the Cockpit & Cabin Systems for our eVTOL platform, focusing on the human-facing components.
A typical day could involve integrating human factors principles into the design of the Cockpit and Cabin systems, working with pilots to optimize control layouts, or conducting trade studies to ensure our designs meet optimal safety and efficiency standards.
Your ability to balance technical engineering requirements with human-centered design principles while working effectively across multidisciplinary teams will be critical to your success in this role.
What You'll Do
1. You will work with pilots and the Flight Control department to conduct the system-level design, analysis, integration and validation of pilot controls.
2. You will define human factors principles and apply them to the design of the cockpit and cabin, incorporating the latest human factors standards.
3. You will develop a human factors strategy to evaluate the human machine interface in the cockpit and cabin and develop the team on human factors topics.
4. You will perform trade studies for the Cockpit & Cabin Systems ensuring the design is optimal to meet the needs of Vertical Aerospace, its customers and the authorities.
5. You will capture the engineering specification in Vertical's modelling & requirements environment, enabling end-to-end traceability for the designed components.
6. You will perform verification and validation activities to ensure systems meet user requirements and function as intended.
7. You will coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure system compatibility and integration into the platform.
8. You will lead projects within the Cockpit & Cabin Systems team and deliver designs, take responsibility for hardware & software delivery within your domain, plan, design and execute lab test activities and produce design documentation.
9. You will stay current with technological advancements and look to implement new technologies into designs.
What You'll Bring
1. Bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace engineering, electrical & electronic engineering or a related field. Additional training in systems engineering or human factors is a plus.
2. Proven experience in systems engineering (>5 years), with experience working with human-facing systems. Work experience in a human factors team beneficial.
3. Knowledge of aviation regulations (e.g., FAA, EASA) and standards related to human factors (MIL-STD-1472H, FAA HF-STD-001).
4. Proficiency in systems engineering tools and methodologies.
5. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
6. Familiarity and work experience with ARP4761, ARP4754 and DO-160.
7. Experience with Product Lifecycle Management systems (3DX preferred).
8. Experience with system modelling applications (MATLAB System Composer preferred).
9. Experience with requirements management tools (JAMA preferred).
