We’re supporting our client, a global, leading injection moulding company based in Hereford, who are looking for a Lead Toolmaker to join their growing team. The successful Lead Toolmaker will have previous toolmaking experience within the injection moulding industry, as well as possess comprehensive knowledge of the design, manufacture and maintenance of complex injection mould tooling.
Job Summary: As a Lead Toolmaker, you’ll be reporting to the Managing Director, working hands on, working with and overseeing a small team involved in the maintenance and repair of existing tools as well as making adjustments to the components of new tools as required.
Responsibilities for Lead Toolmaker:
* As the most experienced Tool Maker, responsible for overseeing and supporting the other members Tool Room team, ensuring they are working safely and inline with Company policies and procedures.
* Responsible for supporting the maintenance, repair and modification of injection mould tools and components, enabling production to meet customer demands and targets.
* Working as the Company Tooling Expert, supporting with complex tooling queries and GA reviews.
* Liaise with our external tooling partner where necessary to manage new tooling, modifications and repairs effectively and cost effectively, to the business and customers timeframes.
* Produce components from engineering drawings, and through reverse engineering.
* Utilisation of CAD /to review and optimise tool designs, using CAM to machine components.
* Undertaking clean downs and detail changes on tools as required.
* Operating the Hurco CNC, Grinding Machines, Centre Lathes and XYZ Milling as well as manual Milling and Turning Machines and other relevant tool room machinery and fitting work as the business demands.
* To produce new tools, moulds and hot plate welding jigs in line with project and business objectives.
* To test and confirm electrical and hydraulic/pneumatic operation of tools before return to production.
* To be proactive in making tooling modifications to improve scrap cycle time and tool reliability.
* To record all relevant data pertaining to tooling and record onto Winman, ALS and the QMSR 52 Tooling Register.
* Manufacture jigs and fixtures from drawings.
* Creates machining programs for the machining of plastics parts for production.
* Support and oversee Apprentices and other Tool Room personnel.
* Manage the Tooling processes in line with ISO900 and ISO13485.
About You:
* Experienced (minimum 5 years) Tool Maker within injection moulding industry.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the design, manufacture and maintenance of complex injection mould tooling including hot runners, 2-shot and multi-core tools.
* NQV Level 3 qualified (or equivalent) in Tool Making
* Accuracy, efficiency, adaptability and attention to detail.
* Able to work without supervision, and able to support and guide others within the team as well as demonstrable experience of problem-solving tooling related issues within production.
* Experience of injection mould tooling from concept through design and into production and proven experience in setting and operating tool making machines (lathes, mills, grinders etc).
* Excellent time management – able to manage own time and work to set deadlines.
* Computer literate with ability to use Microsoft Word, Teams, Excel and Outlook and ERP systems such as WinMan.
* Excellent communication skills – able to converse with internal and external stakeholders.
* Work to the competencies outlined for grade 4 or 5 (depending on current level) identified in the Tool Room Grading Structure.
