An exciting opportunity has opened for two part-time Medical Laboratory Assistants to join the Coagulation Department based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. The Coagulation Department provides diagnostic and support services for inpatients, outpatients and General Practitioners. Additionally, it offers specialist coagulation services related to bleeding disorders and thrombosis. The Department handles a high volume of blood samples from the South Yorkshire region and beyond. The post holder would be responsible for receiving and handling these samples, including moving them in and out of frozen storage at low temperatures. The post holder would also be involved in input of patient data into a laboratory information system. Working hours would be between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday by agreement. In addition to primary diagnostic procedures, the department has both a national and international role in the calibration of laboratory standards and reagents for coagulation assays and accepts commissioned commercial work from diagnostic and pharmaceutical. Main duties of the job To assist scientific staff in laboratory activities. Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and process. Perform accurate data entry into the Laboratory Information Management System. To deal with deliveries and distribution of post, distribution and storage of consumables and handling/management of waste within the department. Prepare sample aliquots for batch analysis, freeze at low temperature and retrieve upon demand. Maintain the storage archive of frozen sample aliquots To store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures. Deal with direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff and other service users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary. Exchanges information with colleagues and service users, e.g. specimen requirements for laboratory tests. Take appropriate action on non-conformity to standard operating procedures, e.g. minimum requirements for specimen acceptance. The successful candidate should be a good communicator and may be required to work on the Northern General site if necessary.
