At David Austin Roses, we’re more than just a horticultural company; we’re a passionate family business dedicated to breeding and cultivating the most exquisite English Roses. With over fifty years of rich heritage, we take great pride in creating roses that are not only beautiful but also fragrant and charming. Our love for roses and commitment to excellence has made us a beloved name in gardens around the world. We are incredibly fortunate to work alongside a talented group of individuals who share our passion. Together, we strive to bring David Austin Senior’s vision to life from our beautiful home nestled along a charming country lane in Shropshire. Primary purpose: The role of a General Horticulture Worker within our Nursery team is focused on growing exquisite English roses, providing the best quality care to our roses and then delivering these roses to our customers. With over 200 different varieties of our bare root and potted roses, we supply high volumes of our premium roses directly to our customers through the post, via our onsite Visitor Centre or through our Wholesale partners. Your day to day: Most of our growing is still carried out by hand in our local fields and your role in this could include planting, weeding, wood cutting and nipping out. Once our roses have been lifted from the fields our production team takes over and your role could include grading the roses, potting the roses, picking roses for dispatch and general rose husbandry such as pruning, watering, and monitoring for pest and disease. Within our dispatch team, you will be responsible for preparing the roses to the highest standard, packing them in our recyclable packaging, and dispatching to our Customers. Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the nursery beds, production processes, and storage areas. Monitoring equipment and reporting any maintenance needs or repairs. Keeping accurate records and completing the relevant paperwork required to fulfill orders. What you bring to the team: You’ll be a great team player who enjoys working collaboratively, as well as being happy to work independently as needed. Previous experience of working within a production environment, with the ability to work to targets and deadlines is preferred but not essential. You’ll have an eye for detail and quality, and be able to work alongside your colleagues at the team pace to ensure targets are met. Experience of working within the horticultural industry with a real interest in plants is preferred but not essential. Bags of enthusiasm – a willingness to learn new skills and happy to work in all weathers indoors and outdoors. Flexibility and adaptability – you will switch between a variety of roles and processes within the Nursery team. The ability to operate nursery equipment, tools, and machinery safely where necessary. Physical ability to perform hands-on plant care tasks, including lifting, bending, and prolonged standing (reasonable adjustments will be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010).
