This is a great opportunity to join the Microbiology Media laboratory in Wolverhampton. The purpose of this role is to oversee the Media team responsible for the timely and accurate production of media required within the microbiology laboratory, and to ensure all appropriate quality checks are performed.
Please note this is a permanent full time role working Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 19:00, shift will include working one weekend in every three.
Ensure that sufficient media is produced and provided to the laboratory for the required workload and to this purpose, liaise closely with both main and pathogen laboratory technicians and team leaders.
Supervise staff in your team to ensure efficient operation of production shift.
Effective and timely attendance management of staff in line with company policy, including return to work interviews etc.
Performance management of team to ensure production targets are met.
Recruitment of new staff, managing probation and ensuring engaging an informative induction in place that gives new starter key skills and techniques to perform their role to a high standard.
Manage investigation and discipline / grievance meetings as / where necessary.
Hold team appraisals in line with company policy.
Managing and updating training matrices, ensuring staff members only perform tasks after full training and relevant documentation completed.
Run team briefing meetings on a regular basis to keep team updated and briefed on key matters relating to the site, customer and the team.
To ensure all media is produced in a safe and appropriate manner, and in line with standard operating procedures.
Managing the Media laboratory ensuring standard operating procedures and health & safety procedures are followed, whilst work is conducted in a clean and tidy manner.
To be familiar with COSHH guidelines and working practices within the media laboratory.
Advise Laboratory Manager without delay of any problems affecting operations in the production area of the laboratory.
Ensuring that all quality checks are performed and relevant paperwork related to the production and QC of media is kept up to date.
A flexible approach to work will be required to help assist other departments as and when required.
Qualifications
A-Levels or equivalent in Microbiology. A degree in Microbiology will be of advantage.
Strong knowledge of media production and all aspects of equipment maintenance and calibration.
Knowledge of UKAS and ISO methods.
Working experience in a laboratory.
Competence in IT, including eLIMS.
Knowledge of customers and sample matrices, including specific media requirements.
Experience in NCW/Complaints/Environmental Monitoring.
Strong people management skills.
Strong management skills of for performance/absence management.

Ability to communicate across departments.
Exceptional organisation skills to maintain a good rotation of media.
