We are looking for an exceptional person to join our Gynaecology Team on a fixed term of 12 months. You will have experience and knowledge of cancer services in a hospital setting. The successful candidate will also have excellent computer skills, and be able to manage databases and Microsoft Office applications.
The post holder will be an integral part of the Gynaecology Team, who assists, supports and co-ordinates the pathway for patients ensuring robust communication with members of the Multi-disciplinary team, GPs, patients and relatives. A large part of the role is supporting patients, families, consultants, cancer nurse specialists and other staff involved in the patient pathway.
The post holder will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, must be flexible in approach, able to exercise initiative and demonstrate a consistently high standard of professionalism, being aware of the need for confidentiality and integrity.
The post holder will have excellent communication skills and have an ability to deal with potentially difficult and emotive situations in a sensitive manner and make decisions using their own judgement whilst recognising the remit of the role. In addition, the post holder will be able to signpost patients and carers to the relevant sources of support and information appropriate to their needs.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be the key person identified for providing cancer information and support, to enable people to navigate the health and social care system and make choices that are best for their cancer and their life. The aim of the role is to make sure that people living with cancer can access the right support, at the right time.
The post-holder will take an active role in contributing towards the development and implementation of cancer survivorship initiatives enabling people affected by cancer to navigate the health and social care system and become self-supportive i.e. coordinating health and well-being clinics to enable independence and support self-management as appropriate.
The post holder will co-ordinate care by providing a single point of access for cancer patients including rapid re-entry into the system for those people identified as having urgent or specialist needs.

If successful in this role, there is a requirement for you to have a standard/enhanced DBS. This will be paid for by the Trust and then deducted from your salary over a period of 3 months. As this vacancy is within the division of Womens and Childrens, there is a mandatory requirement for successful applicants to join the DBS update service. The cost of joining the update service is £13 per year, and applicants are liable to cover this cost with no reimbursement from the Trust. Further details of how to join the update service will be provided upon appointment.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training
* NVQ level 3/4 qualification in Health or Social Care or equivalent experience
* Excellent computer/keyboard skills, ECDL or equivalent, proficient in MS Office
* 5 GCSE qualifications with C or above including Maths and English
* Counselling qualification
* Basic Cancer Course
* Experience co-ordinating a patient workload.
* Additional training to Foundation degree / diploma level or equivalent through short courses
Knowledge and Skills
* Minimum 3 years' experience of working in a health or social care setting
* Minimum 2 years' experience of working with cancer patients
* Awareness of the individual needs of people affected by cancer
* Experience of responding to the support and information needs of others
* Previous experience as Senior Support worker
* Experience of working with patients specific to tumour group
* Understanding of Macmillan Cancer Support and its role across the UK
* Awareness of Improving Outcomes; A Strategy for Cancer and other national cancer policies
* Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology
* Experience of working without supervision using own initiative
