The Health Board is looking for a Qualified Optometrist to take on the role of Independent Optometry Advisor. This is a pan-BCU role. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. Main duties of the job The Independent Optometry Advisor is professionally accountable for all Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) (sight tests and eye health) delivered, across the local health board area. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Welsh Government and with health board senior managers and clinicians to achieve agreed outcomes including implementing the future approach to optometry and contracting reform. There will be no expectation for the Independent Adviser to provide clinical services: administrative duties requiring clinical knowledge and judgement will be required. Primarily the role is one of clinical advice and leadership. Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities Providing clinical leadership/advice on optometry services to the Health Board. Providing advice on the planning and commissioning of optometry services. Develop and maintain professional interface with the optometry profession across BCUHB. Support the development of service plans and business cases for investment into optometry services. Support the improvement, redesign and delivery of WGOS across BCUHB. Work closely with and providing expert clinical advice to primary and secondary care departments to facilitate development of sustainable, balanced eye care services across BCUHB. Ensure regular attendance at a number of key meetings, both locally and nationally, providing expert clinical advice on all local matters. Person specification Qualifications And Knowledge Essential criteria Registered as an optometrist with the General Optical Council BSc Hons Optometry or equivalent Educated to Masters level or equivalent demonstrable experience Professional Certificate in Medical Retina and Professional Certificate in Low Vision Desirable criteria Member or Fellow of the College of Optometrists (MCOptom or FCOptom) Post-graduate qualification(s) relating to a highly specialist aspect of clinical optometry, e.g. College of Optometrists Professional/Higher certificate/diploma in contact lens practice / glaucoma/ low vision / medical retina / paediatric eye care Experience Essential criteria Significant post registration experience in optometry Significant experience of clinical governance and quality improvement Desirable criteria Experience of clinical management Experience in teaching/research within Primary Care Skills Essential criteria Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate complex sensitive and potentially emotive information to patients and stakeholders in an appropriate manner suitable for their level of understanding.
