Herd Manager - Dorset
An exciting opportunity for a Herd Manager to lead our Dairy Farm in Dorset has arisen.
Our Farm
We are currently farming 350 acres with 160 cross-bred cows. We are moving from a high-yield system to a grass-based, high-welfare farm. Our cows yield 8,000 litres, and we supply Wyke Cheese with our milk. We milk twice daily through a 16/32 herringbone and Autumn block calve.
Your Role
You will be responsible for:
- Day-to-day running of the dairy farm operation - managing the dairy, milking, and ensuring herd health and welfare is the top priority
- Taking full responsibility for dry cow management, calving cows and colostrum protocols.
- Improving cow genetics and the breeding of the herd.
- Grazing and feed/forage management
- Utilising data and maintaining records and compliance.
- Working closely with the farm owner and associates to strategise and budget plan.
- Collaborate with vets and other third parties.
- Undertake proactive management of health and safety standards across the farm estate.
- Ensuring the farm is kept tidy and safe to operate at all times
- Farm machinery and general farm maintenance, including forage work.
Qualifications & Licenses required
- A full UK Driving license.
- Proof of UK right to work
- AI and Foot Trimming qualification is desired but not essential
Your Requirements
- Able to demonstrate strong herd management experience
- Be able to work on their own initiative and stay motivated when alone working
- Comfortable as a self-starter, who has a high attention to detail
- Be a reliable, resourceful and genuine person
