The Senior Mechanical Engineer – Bearings (Sr Applications Engineer) will be responsible for developing new fluid film bearings and auxiliary components for wind turbines. As a member of a small but growing team, they will be required to contribute to multiple areas of product development – Advanced mathematical modelling of mechanical engineering concepts, bearing design development for ease of manufacture and reduced cost, test rig development, verification, and validation of design via testing and product certification. products and ensuring sufficient design verification and validation steps are in place to meet customer and regulatory requirements, this may include the specification and oversight of product testing. They will apply advanced knowledge of mechanical design and stress analysis to develop reliable designs that have been optimized for ease of manufacture and reduced cost. Problems faced will tend to be difficult and often complex; projects will be managed with limited oversight from the Wind Technical Manager. They will assist / instruct Design Engineers and check drawings for accuracy of design intent and information. The Senior Project Engineer will also be responsible for guiding and mentoring junior members of the engineering team, leading design reviews, preparing DFMEAs, writing engineering standards and developing new design processes & tools. Wind turbine engineering experience while desired is not mandatory. A strong foundation in mechanical engineering concepts and an ability to approach problems using first principles and transfer knowledge from different applications into wind bearings is most important.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
* Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mathmatics, or highly related area, PhD preferred
* Work experience in an engineered product environment, specialized within mechanical machinery manufacturing, ideally involving rotating components, fluid film bearings and seals with high dimensional tolerances
* A background with experience in tribology
* Strong understanding and application of engineering principles and design practices
* Strong understanding of product failure modes and excellent, proven problem-solving skills
* Ability to parametrically model complex, non-linear mechanical engineering concepts, primarily focused on structural and fluid dynamics
* Proficiency with MS Office and Windows operating systems is expected.
* Must have advanced level skill with 3D modelling and using FEA software such as ANSYS, Abaqus or COMSOL
* Experience with data analysis & simulation using MATLAB highly desired.

* Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
* Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, specifications, and governmental regulations.
* Ability to read drawings and prepare graphs, tables, and text for final reports and to write procedure manuals.
* Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, peers.
WHAT YOU DO:
* Prepare concept design proposals for new products; identify requirements, analyze alternative concepts, and determine optimum solution to meet project requirements, reporting on progress on a regular and timely basis, presenting work to project teams, customers, and end users
* Model complex fluid film bearing behavior in wind turbines
* Conduct stress analysis using techniques appropriate for the nature and complexity of the problem. This may include classical methods or Finite Element Analysis, including non-linear contact analysis
* Prepare technical reports outlining the calculations and assumptions used when evaluating the integrity of new designs and prepare DFMEAs
* Develop test specifications, execute testing, monitor product testing, analyze test data, and prepare test reports. Design and/or re-design test rigs to fit test strategy
* Build and maintain an understanding of our manufacturing capabilities and standard design practices sufficient to produce the best-cost alternative for the customer and the company
* Interpret designs, assist / instruct Design Engineers, perform engineering calculations, examine specifications, expedite, and process engineering changes, check general arrangement and component drawings for accuracy of dimension and detail
* Create analytical methods for new products and product enhancements and document standard work processes, engineering standards, procedures, and tools
* Provide guidance and mentor junior engineers, lead design reviews, oversee improvement projects
* Support manufacturing personnel with evaluations of deviated components, corrective action investigations and other quality related activities
* Assist supply chain and quality engineers when evaluating new suppliers
* Support engineering process development and design for manufacturability efforts through specific assignments as directed by the Wind Technical Manager
* Independently responsible for meeting deadlines necessary to support the company’s commitments to customers and manufacturing operations
