Role: Locum Consultant Microbiologist
Rates: £90 - £110 per hour (PAYE)
Shifts: Full time, Monday to Friday + 1:4 On Calls
Location: Watford General Hospital
As a consultant in medical microbiology, your skills, knowledge, and experience are critical in managing HIV/AIDS and other blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B and C and controlling the spread of infectious diseases. You will focus on reducing the spread of infections in hospitals (including hospital 'super bugs' such as MRSA and Clostridium Difficile) in addition to addressing current and newly emerging viruses such as SARS and avian flu.
Working flexible shifts at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, you will enjoy close working relationships with fellow healthcare professionals and liaise between clinical colleagues in the hospital, GPs, and laboratory staff while providing clinical and educational support for junior Microbiologists and Virologists.
As a Microbiology Consultant, you will be fundamental in developing, improving, and expanding the Microbiology and Virology provision within West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
As a Microbiology Consultant, you will:
1. Provide highly complex advice to Consultants, Doctors, Nurses, and other healthcare professionals on the guidance and management of patients with infectious diseases.
2. Make clinical decisions involving the analysis, interpretation, and comparison of highly complex data, including antibiotic resistance analysis.
3. Take responsibility for regular visits to ITU and conduct regular ward rounds.
4. Undertake the day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods, examination, and analysis of complex specimens.
5. Participate in the out-of-hours advisory service on infection diagnosis and management.
6. Work with infection control teams and DIPCs on a local or regional basis.
7. Assist in the investigation and control of community outbreaks.
8. Provide advice in developing clinical guidelines, investigation protocols, and laboratory SOPs.
9. Communicate clinical information to explain findings, diagnosis, and treatment options.
10. Work in and where appropriate, lead a multidisciplinary team.
11. Assess and prioritise patient/client requirements, delegating effectively to others.
12. Help teach and train junior doctors, medical students, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Qualifications/Licenses/Certifications
Essential:
1. Be a GMC registered Doctor (you do NOT need to be on the Specialist Register).
2. Have relevant experience at Consultant level, or references to support your transition up to Consultant level.
3. Hold evidence of stand-alone Right to Work in the UK (unfortunately locum jobs aren't able to offer visa sponsorship).
4. You will need to pass an enhanced background check (DBS).
