As the National Environment Manager, you will play a pivotal role in delivering the environmental aspects of Network Rails Environment and Sustainability Strategy by leading national environmental improvement programmes. Your technical leadership will help guide our Regions and Functions to effectively manage environmental risks and opportunities and enable us to exceed compliance obligations and enhance our overall environmental performance. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining our Environment Management System, ensuring continuous improvement and driving the desired culture across our business to deliver a greener railway.
About the team..
This role sits within the Technical Authority working within the Environment and Sustainability team. This team leads on the Network Rail Environment and Sustainability Strategy including Low Emissions, Biodiversity, and Circular Economy as well as Social Value, our key strategic enablers, and of course Environmental Management.
About the role (External)
What does the average day look like?
As the environmental management focal point for the business, you will lead and manage environmental improvement plans to help us deliver our strategic commitments for a greener railway. You will provide technical leadership on environmental management across Network Rail, to enable successful delivery against environmental legislation, standards, objectives, and other compliance obligations. You will develop and implement robust environmental plans, standards, and procedures, liaising across and beyond the business with our regions, functions and external regulators. You will monitor our performance against environmental legislation and objectives, proactively identifying and addressing risks. You'll foster a culture of environmental excellence, sharing best practices and driving continuous improvement and helping us to achieve a simpler, better and greener railway.
Essential Criteria
·Degree level qualification (minimum UK level 6) in environment / sustainability or other relevant subject (or equivalent through experience).
·Practitioner member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM (or equivalent through experience).
·In depth understanding of environment / sustainability legislation.
·Demonstrable significant experience in managing environment / sustainability matters in a large, complex organisation.
·Experience in implementing successful environmental / sustainability improvements.
·Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a specific emphasis on influencing the views of peers, colleagues, and stakeholders.
·Experience of working with management systems (e.g. ISO or equivalent)
Desirable Criteria
·Masters level qualification in relevant subject
·Full member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM
·Rail industry experience
·Auditing competency
