Job Summary In conjunction with senior laboratory staff, the post-holder will undertake the scientific duties and responsibilities of a clinical scientist in the provision of a comprehensive, modern, high quality Haemato-Oncology diagnostic service, including clinical genetics, at Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust. This will involve delivering a range of specialist immunophenotyping diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of haematological malignancies. The post holder will be expected to prepare first line diagnostic reports for immunophenotyping in line with the services provided by the department. The post holder will also provide scientific advice to other health professionals including senior medical staff, on the selection, performance, and interpretation of highly complex immunophenotyping. The post holder will participate in research and development, innovation, and clinical audit where necessary. Key Responsibilities Communication and working relationships. To be responsible to their line manager and other senior laboratory staff. To collaborate with the other scientific and technical staff to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient delivery of the highest quality of service to patients. To collaborate with all other members of staff where joint operation is necessary to achieve optimal use of resources. To be able to work as a team player in the interests of the service. To liaise with admin staff regarding issues relating to sample admin as required. To deal with enquiries from other healthcare professionals, and to make enquiries to other healthcare professionals, relating to patient and sample information and ascertaining additional clinical details, in an accurate and courteous manner. To maintain close links with clinical staff and when required, represent the service at multidisciplinary meetings within the Trust as described above. Provide and receive highly complex sensitive or possibly contentious information. To provide senior laboratory staff with assistance relating to quality issues. To assist laboratory management with the functioning and effectiveness of the Quality Management System To collaborate with other scientists, within the Trust, Imperial College, and other NHS Trusts and elsewhere as appropriate. To present research and audit reports at local, regional and national scientific and clinical meetings To be a member of Laboratory Medicine H&S committee and ensure health & safety information and requirements are communicated and actioned as required. Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect) To liaise with laboratory users, to understand their needs and to work with the senior laboratory to ensure that services are responsive to changing requirements. To produce relevant information for laboratory users. To assist in the documentation and investigation of service delivery issues notified by laboratory users and to ensure relevant departments are informed and appropriate action is taken. To provide interpretation of the results of highly complex diagnostic investigations and advice that will contribute to patient management. Level of scientific responsibility To process and be proficient in a range of diagnostic analytical techniques used in the laboratory. To check the analytical work of other scientists and nonregistered analysts. To have a broad understanding of the pathology of haematological malignancies, and to show a keen interest in building this expertise up over a period of time. To undertake all laboratory procedures required for the processing of patient samples. To identify when techniques related to the processing of specimens are not working optimally. To apply critical analysis and judgement skills to ensure that the problem is resolved. To communicate where appropriate with more senior staff for advice. To take responsibility for their own work, and to undertake an appropriate proportion of the total workload of the laboratory.
