Visiting Music Teachers work under the guidance of the Director of Music, assisted by the Heads of Faculty and Music Administrator to provide the best possible instrumental tuition and to promote musical activity throughout the College.
Visiting Music Teachers are required to:
1. Provide the highest possible standard of one-to-one teaching on their instrument(s) to pupils aged 13-18, ranging from complete beginners to those of Diploma standard (most pupils are Grade 5 or above).
2. Encourage pupils to engage with their musical studies at a level appropriate to their aims and abilities, including practising, performing at informal or formal concerts, playing/singing in ensembles, or entering for examinations.
3. Keep lesson registers and records of progress of pupils, and provide information on the progress of pupils to the Director of Music when required.
4. Report pupils’ absences in accordance with departmental procedures.
5. Write termly reports to parents, and liaise with the Head of Faculty and parents over any concerns or issues.
6. Advise the Head of Faculty and Director of Music on the inclusion of pupils in school ensembles.
7. Prepare pupils for music examinations (ABRSM or Trinity) as appropriate, including preparation for theory exams, sight-reading and aural tests. (The department provides additional aural classes for candidates taking the higher grades, but this should also be covered in their lessons with the Visiting Music Teacher).
8. Prepare pupils for concerts as appropriate, and encourage them to make the most of the performing opportunities available to them.
9. Follow the College’s Safeguarding policy and promote and safeguard the welfare of all pupils.
10. Attend the annual planning meeting prior to the start of each academic year, and undertake such training as may be reasonably required by the College to properly adapt to the changing requirements of the College and the role, or as may be necessary to fulfil the College's statutory or regulatory obligations.
11. Provide timely and accurate information in respect of expense claims.
12. Where appropriate, the Director of Music may invite some Visiting Music Teachers to direct school ensembles, for which additional fees will be payable by the College.
Disclosure Check
As Winchester College is an educational establishment, a condition of employment will be that the successful candidate must consent to the school obtaining an Enhanced Level Disclosure Check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). This will reveal all spent and unspent convictions, warnings, cautions and bind-overs. A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders is available on the school’s website.
Safeguarding is one of the primary responsibilities of this role. The jobholder is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact with, and will need to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy at all times. A Visiting Music Teacher should be conversant with the responsibilities and procedures detailed in this policy and with the Department for Education’s Keeping Children Safe in Education. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the Visiting Music Teacher becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead or in their absence the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.
