Embarking on a career as a Detective is a rewarding career, with a unique chance to have an immediate and positive impact on the most vulnerable people within our communities.
Policing is a job like no other – it’s a highly rewarding role that’s varied, it’s exciting but challenging. Becoming a police officer gives you the opportunity to make a difference in the community. You’ll aid in reducing crime and provide a reassuring presence, whilst making life safer and happier for the people you serve.
When you join Humberside Police, you’ll develop both personally as well as professionally. Through the Police Constable Entry Programme – Detective Pathway and the bespoke training you receive at Courtland Road (Humberside Training Centre) and on the job, you’ll gain skills for life that will serve you well as your policing career progresses.
As a detective constable, you’ll typically work on varied investigations, including ‘volume and priority’ investigations such as theft and burglaries, domestic abuse and hate crime incidents, knife crime and missing persons. To be a good detective, you also need to have excellent communication skills – you need to be able to listen, be empathetic and tuned in to people’s reactions, along with the ability to break down complex problems there by enabling you plan and prioritise your investigations.
Working on investigations guarantees that no two days will be the same. The work can be challenging as you are likely to deal with some of the most vulnerable people subjected to the worst type of offending and this takes the right person to step up and seek justice for them. The rewards from this type of work however are unique; not only are you often the voice for someone who is at their lowest ebb but are responsible for protecting others from such harm through creative safeguarding measures based on intelligence.
There is great pride for officers who bring about successful prosecutions at court, after weeks and months of hard work, often resulting in sentences well in excess of a decade. Of equal importance is the preventative work that takes place where there is an identified risk but a lack of opportunity to convict – this is where we need people to present creative solutions to work with other areas of policing to mitigate risk and to consider preventative pieces of work. Though court convictions are great it is far better that the crime be prevented in the first place and officers and staff are empowered to work together, along with other agencies, to achieve this. Above all, you will find that the team spirit second to none and an environment of supportive colleagues with a shared common interest of making a difference.
