What is this Job about?
Tunnels and underground structures form an increasingly important part of modern-day infrastructure. This infrastructure provides economic, societal, and environmental benefits through the facilitation of the efficient and rapid movement of people below-ground. This may be in mass transit systems, high-speed rail lines or in highway tunnels.
We are looking for bright and enthusiastic mechanical engineers (or other numerate discipline) to join our tunnel ventilation team to help us plan, design, and enable tunneling projects worldwide and ensure that our tunnels and underground structures are safe, comfortable and reliable.
As a tunnel ventilation engineer, you will design and analyse tunnel ventilation systems for both normal and emergency operations. You will also assess the related elements such as fire and life safety systems following client specifications and worldwide standards. You will work on a range of underground facilities and tunnels, including metro systems, railway stations, road tunnels, cable tunnels and more.
You will already have experience in some of these areas and be able to apply that experience to AtkinsRéalis projects as part of a small, dedicated and specialist team - such areas will include:
1. Planning, designing and installing ventilation systems for tunnel projects.
2. Working on a range of systems to ensure tunnels are safe.
3. Planning and overseeing commissioning, operation, refurbishment, and upgrade of tunnel infrastructure.
4. On-site inspection and performance testing of tunnel ventilation systems.
5. Applying fluid mechanics and thermodynamics for fire and ventilation modelling.
6. Implementing fire safety engineering, risk analysis and evacuation analysis.
What are we looking for?
1. Solid years of experience in engineering in road and rail tunnel ventilation design, fire and life-safety design, gained in road, rail and/or metro tunneling schemes.
2. Excellent technical skills and numeracy skills acquired during your academic background. Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer and smoke behaviour principles in enclosed environments.
3. Advanced user of 1D design tools such as IDA for Road and SES for rail.
4. Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling and visualisation using programs such as FDS, Pyrosis and Smoke view or others.
5. Movement Modelling Analysis evacuation and crowd simulations using computational models such as Pathfinder.
6. Up to date knowledge of current legislation and standards applicable in tunnel ventilation design.
7. Demonstrating technical expertise, providing in depth knowledge whilst proactively coaching and developing graduate/early career professionals.
In addition to that, we expect:
1. High motivation to succeed, and to progress and develop your career.
2. Personality compatible with a high degree of collaborative and teamwork in multi-disciplinary and international projects.
3. Communication and writing skills which can produce clear and concise reports or presentations.
4. Willingness to travel on short assignments within the UK and overseas for dealing with challenging projects or participation in reputed conferences.
What we offer?
AtkinsRéalis recognise that there are many well qualified people who are looking to further their career, but who cannot commit to full time employment. We support flexible working arrangements and are interested to discuss how we can accommodate individual requirements. As part of this commitment, we understand the need for a diverse and flexible workforce, where a work-life balance is important.
Rewards and Benefits:
We offer a competitive salary that is regularly tested against other consultants with a default 25-days leave each year plus bank holidays and options to buy some or sell of that leave. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Training:
AtkinsRéalis is committed to developing its people both personally and professionally. Our colleagues have the advantage of access to a high ranging training portfolio and development activities designed to help make the best of individual's abilities and talents. We also actively support staff in achieving corporate membership of relevant institutions.
Additional Information:
This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
We are committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community - a place where we can all be ourselves, thrive and develop.
