Do you have Warranty & Indemnity experience and are looking to further your career?
Come and work in our Warranty & Indemnity team here at Markel!
The opportunity:
We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Underwriter to join our W&I team in London. The team is currently comprised of 7 individuals, Head of W&I, a Senior Underwriter, 3 Underwriters, Assistant Underwriter, and Grad Assistant Underwriter. The team was set up in 2022 to write open market W&I risks. PFR has supported a broad portfolio of coverholders in the transactional liability space since 2014, which has performed well and informed a long-term strategy to underwrite directly alongside the delegated book. The team focuses on underwriting SME risks (deal sizes of c. GBP/USD/EUR 3m to 300m) in the UK and Europe, leveraging the data and insights from its coverholder portfolio and the resources of a global, multi-line specialist insurer. We expect our portfolio to expand to other regions as we evidence the underwriting model and grow.
We are looking for someone who is organised, has attention to detail, and a keen eagerness to learn. You will be joining a highly motivated team at an exciting time as we look to establish ourselves as the market leader in W&I SME risks and embrace new ideas in terms of portfolio construction, policy development, and IT solutions.
What you’ll be doing:
* Contributing to the W&I underwriting strategy to establish a market-leading team within the W&I marketplace.
* Review and assist in underwriting new risks using a technical rating model and coverage guidelines that we have developed.
* Support operational efficiency by coordinating incoming broker submissions, organizing deadlines, and streamlining workflow processes within the team.
* Analyse historical claims and underwriting data to identify trends, generate insights, and contribute to refining underwriting strategies and risk assessment methodologies.
* Build and maintain strong working relationships with brokers and other distribution partners, establishing yourself as a reliable point of contact in the market.
* Foster collaborative relationships internally across underwriting, claims, and operational teams to support overall business goals and maintain a positive team culture.
* Develop skills in negotiating policy terms and conditions.
Our must haves:
* Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of W&I underwriting by working with the more experienced underwriters on the team. Prior experience in W&I insurance is not required. Prior insurance, legal, accounting, tax or M&A experience is preferred.
* Strong analytical capability and attention to detail, especially when reviewing broker submissions and early-stage underwriting information.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to build and maintain positive relationships internally and externally.
* Adaptable mindset and driven to improve operational efficiency.
