This is an exciting role within the Environment Agency Chemicals Programme. This Programme provides the framework and governance to ensure we understand risks to the environment and people from chemical manufacture, use and disposal and act to influence policy and manage those risks. Interpreting Environment Agency and external data is essential to enable us to fulfil our potential influence in this area.
We are recruiting a junior data analyst who will work closely with two other data analysts, and the wider Chemicals Surveillance and Emerging Risks team, to provide evidence to support the management of chemicals in the water environment, and development of associated policy.
Duties may include:
1. Collating and interpreting environmental data to inform risk assessment.
2. Supporting data analysis for the chemicals Prioritisation and Early Warning System.
3. Managing data queries and production of data summaries to support decision-making.
4. Administration and quality control checks on a data platform used to interrogate chemical screening data.
5. Maintaining and updating open data products for chemical screening data.
6. Reviewing monitoring requirements to enable evidence-led decision making.

The team
The post sits within the Chemicals Surveillance and Emerging Risks Team in the Chemicals Programme, a national team within the Environment and Business Directorate. The team are focused on ensuring emerging chemical risks are identified, and we have robust evidence to influence policy and inform our regulatory responses. We are a dispersed team, and you will need to be comfortable working via MS Teams. We hold in person meetings in Birmingham or Bristol quarterly.
Experience/skills Required
Essential:
1. A degree or equivalent experience in environmental sciences, chemistry, or another scientific discipline relevant to the broad area of chemicals in the environment.
2. Attention to detail and enthusiasm for data.
3. Ability to balance multiple pieces of work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
4. Interest in ongoing concerns about chemicals in the environment.
5. Ability to extract relevant information from technical reports.
6. Excellent communication skills.
7. Confidence working independently with support, and collaboratively within a team.
8. Proficiency with common digital tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Desirable:
1. Experience of data analysis including working with geospatial data.
2. Competence using appropriate tools for querying or working with large datasets.
3. A working knowledge of statistics in environmental contexts.
4. Familiarity using digital solutions for working within a dispersed team.

You will have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible.
We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel; some travel and overnights may be required.
