Location: Office base can be either London (W1A), Salford, Glasgow or Newcastle. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.
Salary: Up to £87,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience.
THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Principal Data Scientist to join the Content Publishing Data Science team in Product Group. The successful candidate will be a technical leader in a highly cross-functional team working to build AI products from research to impactful production systems. The team focuses on large language models and other generative AI technologies to support content production and audience engagement.
Main Responsibilities
As a Principal Data Scientist, you will deliver value to BBC audiences by developing machine learning products at scale. Responsibilities include:
1. Hands-on coding work to develop, deploy, and iterate on generative AI systems.
2. Lead architecture design and implement ideas from recent research papers.
3. Conduct code reviews and set best practices.
4. Lead projects involving several different teams and engage with editorial stakeholders.
5. Share knowledge, mentor junior colleagues, and shape culture and ways of working.
Are you the right candidate?
Essential criteria:
1. Extensive hands-on experience in data science and machine learning.
2. Strong coding skills, particularly in Python.
3. Expertise in large language models/generative AI.
4. Proven track record leading projects to deliver value in production.
5. Ability to clearly communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences.
6. Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
Desirable experience:
1. Good knowledge of cloud services, ideally AWS.
2. Experience with model lifecycle management and MLOps, including model deployment, versioning and monitoring.
3. Good knowledge of code management and deployment best practices.
4. Ability to mentor and support other team members.
