About the job Job summary Defence Children Services (DCS) has a vacancy for an NHS Band 7 Health and Wellbeing Advisor to join the Defence Children Services organisation whose Headquarters is based in Wiltshire. The DCS Health and Wellbeing Advisor (HWA) will work as part of the Safeguarding (Health and Wellbeing) Team whoare based at Upavon and led by the SO1 Safeguarding and Allegations Manager. The Safeguarding team include specialist Safeguarding, Nursing, Health and Wellbeing advisors and are supported by a Clerk. The safeguarding team are responsible for the quality of safeguarding delivery in DCS Schools and Settings. The DCS HWA will promote the health of school aged children, and the wider school community, ensuring adequate school and community-based health education programmes and activities, and through direct input in school health education programmes and teaching alongside education staff in school settings. The DCS HWA will contribute to the safeguarding, and protection of school aged children at risk of abuse and to provide ongoing monitoring, support and advice. The fundamental role of the DCS HWA is to co-ordinate and deliver public health interventions to improve children and young peoples health and wellbeing within Defence Children Services. The DCS HWA is a qualified and experienced nurse, specialising in public health and young people who will provide an easily accessible young person friendly, clinically effective high-quality service This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Job description The successful candidate will be working in newly established role offering strategic lead for DCS in health and wellbeing matters, providing health guidance and subject matter expertise to DCS schools, consultative health advice for pupils in areas where access to DCS school nurses is limited, provide professional supervision for school nurses at the DCS Queen Victoria School in Scotland leading on health projects and standards alongside other health and medical professionals. They will take a lead role in strategic work and will be required to represent DCS at multi agency groups and panels offering nursing, Health and Wellbeing subject matter expertise. They will apply their communication and relationship skills to provide and receive complex, sensitive information to individuals and large groups, removing any barriers to understanding. The successful candidate will apply their highly developed specialist knowledge and experience to assess and analyse complex information and situations and develop effective proposals, including Early Help to improve outcomes for Service children. Plan and organise specialised nursing service provision and/or specialised health and education programmes, coordinating multi-disciplinary groups of specialist provision. Be responsible for proposing policy/service developments or changes for their own specialist area but may also impact beyond their own area or on other disciplines. They will provide an assessment of the requirement for and if appropriate authorise overtime and agency nurse payments. Provide professional/clinical supervision and teach/deliver specialist training for other nurses employed within DCS. Regularly undertake research activity to improve outcomes for service children. Within this role the successful candidate will have freedom to act and be accountable for your own professional actions including but not limited to the scheduling of visits, reports, meetings, data analysis. Liaise and advocate on behalf of service children and parents; identify, arrange and commission required health related training in support of DCS schools; provide subject matter expertise in relation to policies and practices that relate to Service children, across Defence Develop, co-ordinate and review deliver Public Health protocols to improve children and young peoples health and wellbeing Facilitate supervision for DCS nursing Establishing/maintaining health links within and outside of the MOD including the NHS, associated Host Nation and Private facilities in conjunction with Defence Healthcare partners. Complete Assurance visits to all DCS establishments in the UK and Overseas Provides specialist education and training to other staff, students and other MOD staff supporting DCS Schools and Settings.
