Job overview
Applications are invited for a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with an interest in lower limb arthroplasty and fragility fractures. The appointed candidate will work as part of a large Trauma & Orthopaedic Department across sites including the Major Trauma Centre at Royal Sussex County Hospital and tertiary elective unit, Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC), on the Princess Royal Hospital site, Haywards Heath.
Elective inpatients are treated at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) and the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC). At PRH there are two Orthopaedic wards and two available operating theatres for NOF and complex arthroplasty patients. At the SOTC we have one Orthopaedic ward (Newick) and four operating theatres with lists running Monday to Friday.
Main duties of the job
* Undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care.
* Work and support all members of the clinical team in theatres, clinics and wards.
* Day to day management of patients, liaison with trauma nurse practitioners and participation in meetings.
* Undertake and be up to date with mandatory training.
* Observe the rules and policies together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
* Ensure to maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointed candidate is expected to manage Hip fracture fixation and fragility femoral trauma. It is essential that they can treat periprosthetic femoral fractures and will form part of the hip fracture unit MDT. The on-call responsibility for this post will include participation in Hip Fracture cover during the week and a 1 in 8 weekend. The role will cover fragility femoral fracture operating, fracture clinics (including virtual), ward rounds, trauma operating, elective operating and other roles necessary to support the department. Elective surgery is undertaken at the SOTC which is a GIRFT accredited HVLC Hub. The appointee is expected to be committed to the improvement of quality of clinical care and to participate in incident reporting, risk management and Clinical Unit Governance Meetings which are held every other month. Attendance to such meetings is obligatory outside of mitigating circumstances.

Experience & Qualifications
* Basic Medical Degree
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* CCT in Orthopaedics or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
Clinical Skills & Experience
* Minimum of 12 months’ fellowship experience in lower limb arthroplasty
* Minimum of 12 months’ consultant experience
* Experience/accreditation in robotic arthroplasty surgery
* An ability to communicate well with patients and staff
* Expertise in management of fragility and peri-prosthetic fractures
Knowledge
* Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
Organisation & Planning
* Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
* Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended
