This position is for twelve months. The post holder will support the clinical and research needs of the department and is suitable for someone looking to gain sub-specialty experience in Medical Retina. The post holder will be required to have Ophthalmology skills including slit lamp examination, fundus examination, OCT interpretation, and retinal laser. The post holder will have the opportunity to work in specialist AMD, Diabetic, Uveitis, and Retinal Genetics clinics alongside Retinal consultants. They will also have the opportunity to discuss cases during Retinal Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings which happen once a week. There are ample teaching sessions, specialist MR teaching sessions happen once a week along with the opportunity to present in regional North East Retina Group (NERG) meetings happening twice a year. Sunderland Eye Infirmary is fully equipped with a twin main theatre suite and there will be opportunity to accommodate surgical training based on the professional needs of the successful candidate.
You will have current GMC registration and a minimum of two years experience in Ophthalmology in the UK. Completed MRCOphth or equivalent, full general Ophthalmology experiences are essential. Applicants should have evidence of ongoing professional development with good interpersonal and communication skills.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will hold FRCOphth qualification or equivalent and ideally have spent a substantial period of time in sub-specialist training (i.e., 1-year fellowship prior to taking up post), with at least some of this in an internationally recognised centre.
Overall Responsibilities
1. Support the current Consultants in keeping within the Trust targets for new patients and to continue to achieve 18 weeks RTT.
2. Support the current Consultants in keeping within the NPSA Directive for review patients, avoiding cancelled follow-ups.
3. Maintain high levels of patient satisfaction in the unit by helping to provide a Consultant led service.
4. Support the current Consultants in the medical and surgical management of VR/Medical Retinal ophthalmology. Audit outcomes and compare to the standards currently being set.
5. Help with teaching and training of junior doctors, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, and medical students.
6. Actively participate in service development within the sub-specialty and across the entire Ophthalmology unit.
The post will involve outpatient clinics, Argon laser clinics, intravitreal injection clinics, and cataract surgery sessions at Sunderland Eye Infirmary Outpatients department composed of one clinical session of four hours. The location of the clinic is open to discussion according to the needs of the service and the applicant.
Post-holders are encouraged to attend internal CPD held in the Ophthalmology Department.
Person Specification
Teaching and Education
* Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
* Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
* Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Experience
* Able to perform full Ophthalmic examination including slit lamp examination and indirect ophthalmoscopy.
* Able to interpret ophthalmic imaging and visual fields.
* Ability to perform retinal laser.
* Postgraduate Ophthalmology training.
Qualifications
* Primary medical qualification.
* Full GMC registration and license to practice.
* Knowledge of local primary care.
* Previous Ophthalmology experience.
Audit and Research
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
* Involvement in quality improvement measures.
* Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in specialty area.
* Experience of clinical research.
* Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals.
