Main duties of the job
This part-time B7 Physiotherapy post is working within a small MDT in the South of England adult primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) management service at University Hospital Southampton. You will be working alongside the current B7 Physiotherapist to provide specialist care to 140 adults with PCD. You will also work closely with the B7 PCD nurse specialist and the B6 PCD Nurse specialist.
The role will involve attending MDT clinics in Southampton and at our regional joint clinics, including Windsor, Penzance, Plymouth, Exeter, and Bristol. You will need to be able to work flexibly to ensure that you can travel to the clinics. Time back will be given if you work a longer day. You will be expected to assess and treat patients with complex respiratory needs, working with the MDT to ensure patients receive timely and effective care to manage their condition.
The role also includes working with colleagues in the paediatric diagnostic and management PCD service in Southampton to ensure patients have access to PCD diagnostic tests. You will have many opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge through in-service training, national and international meetings, and conferences.
We provide a 7-day therapy service for our Trust and therefore you need to be able to work weekends and bank holidays, on a rota basis. This includes our acute respiratory out of hours service at night and weekends (On-call), and our long-term ventilation on-call service.

Job responsibilities
We are looking for a highly experienced, motivated, and pro-active respiratory Physiotherapist to work in a dedicated, friendly MDT. You will need evidenced experience of working with adults with suppurative lung disease and providing holistic care to patients with complex respiratory and psychological needs. This role is the ideal opportunity for an individual who is keen to develop their specialist respiratory knowledge as well as their leadership skills.
The South of England adult PCD management service was commissioned by NHS England in 2020 and is one of only four specialist adult PCD services in England. The multi-professional team in Southampton work closely with local colleagues, as well as nationally, to provide care for patients living throughout the South of England, including the Channel Islands. The team has excellent links with respiratory services in regional hospitals and works closely with consultant, nursing, and physiotherapy colleagues in these hospitals to ensure continuity of care for our patients between the hospitals.
As well as attending weekly clinics in Southampton you will be expected to attend regional clinics and provide expert advice on the physiotherapy management of PCD to colleagues in regional hospitals. Attendance at these clinics is approximately every 2 months and may require an overnight stay in a local hotel. All travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed.
The post holder will be expected to engage in service development including clinical audit and research. The role will require supervising undergraduate students, as well as providing specialist advice to colleagues at UHS and nationwide. Additionally, you will work closely with the PCD nursing team to triage phone calls and emails and ensure that the service is covered throughout the working week from 9am 5pm.
The post holder will be expected to engage in research, as well as regular clinical audits, and maintain up to date skills and knowledge to implement evidence-based practice. The role will require supervising undergraduate students, as well as providing specialist advice to colleagues.
The successful applicant would be expected to work at weekends within all fields of medicine and be rostered on the Physiotherapy respiratory on-call and twilight rota, working across the acute wards and/or the home ventilation on-call service.
