What does an apprenticeship at Ian Williams involve? Being an Apprentice at Ian Williams, gives you the opportunity to be “hands on” and learn on the job, so you’re not just learning about decorating, you ARE decorating You will combine a combination of college and practical learning to study your chosen trade. You will get the opportunity to put your new skills into practice, while supported by the expert guidance of our experienced tradespeople - your own mentor. What will I be doing? The specific type of work will vary contract to contract, most of the contracts are based in social housing but occasionally you get to do something a bit different (we recently painted a lighthouse). The types of tasks we cover include: Preparing surfaces (filling, sanding, caulking) Mastering the art of paint application (rolling, cutting in, brush skills) Sprucing up gloss work (doors and window frames, skirtings) Getting outdoors with external works (railings, sheds, fences and walls) Exploring different sites, working both inside and outside in all weather, whether it’s getting hot in the homes, or wrapping up in the winter on a commercial site As well as this, you will: Attend college to understand “the how and the why” of your chosen trade (usually 1 day a week) Build a fantastic portfolio of evidence to go towards your End Point Assessment Be a valued member of the team and contribute to the overall success What will I need to apply? You don’t need to have had prior experience, all we ask for is; A genuine passion for painting and decorating and hands-on practical work A positive attitude with a willingness to stick with it and problem solve Commitment to building your career at Ian Williams – we are as committed to you as you are to us Strong organisational skills (to successfully juggle college and work) GCSE (or equivalent) grade 3 (D) or above in Maths and English DT or construction based qualification would be beneficial but is not essential It will be your responsibility to get to site or an agreed pick up location.
