About Salary Finance Working with employers, we provide a financial wellbeing platform as an employee benefit, helping employees to understand their money better, get out of debt faster and save for their future. We already have a reach of over 4,000,000 employees through our relationships with over 600 of the biggest companies in the UK. By improving employee financial wellbeing, we have a very real and meaningful impact on people’s lives. We remove the stress and worry associated with financial difficulties by dramatically reducing the interest rates employees pay on their personal debt, and provide them with the tools needed to start saving sooner and be more financially secure. We are backed by some of the biggest brands, including investments from Blenheim Chalcot (the UK’s leading venture builder), Legal and General (the FTSE 100 insurer and asset manager), Experian and Goldman Sachs, and funding partnerships with JP Morgan and Virgin Money. Launched in 2015, we have made excellent progress, and are scaling fast. We are named BITC’s Responsible Business of Year 2018, included in KPMG’s Global Fintech 100, listed top of the Forbes' list of socially-responsible startups, and profiled by the Financial Times, the Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, the Telegraph, CityAM and the Institute of Directors. Your role in our mission We’re looking for a Site Reliability Engineer. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will work to innovate, secure, and develop the technical operations capabilities of Salary Finance. You’ll work as part of the SRE team to scale systems, automate, enhance and standardise processes, improve performance and recommend improvements. However, we believe in DevOps as a culture, not just a job title, so your work won’t end there. You’ll also work across the whole technology team, the product team, and all parts of Salary Finance, to build and operate secure, high-performing, resilient and efficient systems and products. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and reliable, with a great work ethic, and will inspire colleagues. What you’ll do You’ll be providing expertise to the whole company, but in particular to the development team, to enable the company’s services to be more reliable, secure, efficient and performant. You’ll be involved throughout the product lifecycle from inception and design, through implementation, to deployment and operation. This means you’ll be involved at the very start of projects, providing design and architecture advice and supporting developers to get new initiatives off the ground. Once services are launched, you’ll be supporting them (including as part of an on-call rota) and going beyond just responding to PagerDuty. We have a mindset of continuous improvement and always look for opportunities to make things easier and better for ourselves and our customers. Working with colleagues in the SRE team, you will manage availability, performance and capacity, for all layers - data, application and platform. You’ll be involved - both individually, and as part of team efforts - in troubleshooting, development, optimisation, tuning and operating systems and services. About you You’ll need experience of working in, analysing, operating and troubleshooting a large scale, highly transactional environment. Our services all run on AWS. You’ll need to have significant commercial experience in using EC2, ECS, RDS, Lambda, plus supporting technologies such as VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, ELB, CodePipeline etc. and the AWS security services. Technologies we use day-to-day include Terraform, Grafana, Git (Github & Github Actions), Linux and Docker. You’ll need to have significant experience of all of these. We also use Honeycomb and OpenTelemetry. Experience with these, or another observability platform is essential to enable you to solve problems in a systematic, collaborative way. The ability to read, understand and debug code is more important than the ability to write code - but the SRE team do occasionally do write some code, usually in shell or Python. Our services are written in C#, VB.NET, Javascript (Vue & Node), Python and R. You should be able to pick up a piece of code that you’re unfamiliar with and help to troubleshoot it quickly. We mostly use MySQL databases on Aurora Serverless. You will need to know SQL, and you will need some knowledge of MySQL administration and optimisation. A good understanding of the modern security landscape is important. We take security seriously - the protection of vital information assets is our number one priority. You’ll need to be comfortable implementing and advising on best security practices, and working with AWS and other third party security tools. You should be comfortable working in a cross-functional team environment with peers and stakeholders in every part of an organisation. Your communication skills need to be excellent and you need to be comfortable tailoring your communication styles depending on the technical level of your audience. You should be passionate about developing and improving your own knowledge and practice, and equally passionate about sharing your knowledge and experience with others. Nice to Haves If you can write code in any of C#, VB.NET or Javascript, and/or have experience of CI/CD for mobile apps, that’d be a bonus. We have some services which run on Windows and SQL Server, using TeamCity for CI/CD. If you’ve got experience with these, great, if not, you’ll need a willingness to learn. We are considering using PostgreSQL for some future projects. We operate in a highly regulated environment, and if you’ve experience of this, that would be ideal. We are FCA regulated and maintain ISO27001 and Cyber Essentials certifications. Who you are We embrace our differences, but there’s one thing we like to share, which is our values, so it’s important to us that you are: Fearless, and able to make the impossible possible. Responsible, and want to help build a business that delivers a meaningful difference to society. Dedicated and want to commit to an exciting journey even through the highs and lows. Empathetic and truly care about every colleague and customer. United, because you understand we achieve more when we work as a team. Humble, and take feedback as a way to continuously improve. What do you get for all your hard work?
