The Role
The Discipline Leader - Aerial Systems Autonomy - Applied Aerial Systems will contribute specialist expertise and inspire a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to achieve outcomes for Defence.
Together with your team, you will deliver scientific outcomes and informed advice to enhance the capability provided by Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) both now and into the future. You will draw on your significant demonstrated experience to develop and lead a research program in applied aerial autonomy, focusing on delivering enhanced UAS capability into Defence. Together with your team, you will integrate the Trusted Autonomy research outcomes from the Aerial System Autonomy (ASA) group and its partners into both virtual and real-world prototype aerial systems to demonstrate high value mission effects with ADF partners.
The outcomes will shape the future of autonomous collaborative platforms in Defence by demonstrating relevant trusted autonomous behaviours, distributed teaming, and smart sensors / effectors on mission ready prototype platforms. As part of the ASA leadership team, you will contribute to strategy development, resource allocation and build collaboration networks. A key focus will be to develop skills and work programs that deliver and contribute to the Defence Innovation Science and Technology Strategy.
Duties of this position include:
* Lead the application and integration of DSTG Trusted Autonomy Science and Technology (S&T) within prototype autonomous aerial systems in support of priority Defence challenges.
* Lead the planning and delivery of work packages for both Defence Innovation Science and Technology priority aligned programs, including trials.
* Manage the day-to-day operation of the ASA integration and manufacturing testing facilities in Edinburgh.
* Supervision and mentoring of staff within ASA STC.
* Support the Group Leader ASA to maintain strategic alignment of the broader team.
* Provide direction for the team by clearly communicating goals and aims.
* Take a leadership role in domestic and international collaborative partnerships.
* Provide subject matter expert advice in support of Integrated Investment Plan projects.
About our Team
The Aerial Systems Autonomy Science and Technology Capability (STC) leads DSTG's application and exploitation of autonomy and flight systems research for the development of advanced UAS for Defence. Research is focused on developing and demonstrating capabilities to extend UAS into more complex environments including alternate navigation technologies for operations in contested environments; multi-robot collaborative teaming; advanced sensing and responsive decision-making, and novel flight system technologies. The outcomes of this program informs priority ADF acquisitions and enables concept exploration programs to identify future capability needs.

Security Clearance:
Prior to commencement, successful applicants will be required to undergo a psychological assessment and an extensive security clearance process. As a Positive Vetting clearance is required, applicants must be Australian Citizens; be able to account for their personal background for their whole life; and be able to demonstrate suitability to work in a high security intelligence environment.

* Academic qualifications in one or more of the following related fields of research; or
* Relevant skills and work experience.
