Autism Care Assistant for a young person (school hols only) 8hrs/pw £13.09/hr - Whitley Bay - NE25
We are currently looking to recruit a Support Worker to provide support for a 7-year-old little boy. He has a diagnosis of Autism and has delayed development in social interaction. The purpose of your role will be to enable him to access the community safely to take part in activities he enjoys and support to have time away from his family. You will mostly support out in the community but there may be time spent at home. This role is to support during the school holidays; however, there will be the opportunity for extra hours during term time weeks.
This little boy is very energetic and loves spending time with people. He requires support to ensure his safety at all times, especially when outside, as he often runs off. You need to be alert to where he is at all times. He has no danger awareness and is unaware of his personal safety, so an important part of this role will be that he requires constant supervision.
He can display some challenging behaviors such as throwing things and hitting out. There can sometimes be no specific triggers for this. It would be ideal if you had an awareness of safe restraint; however, this isn’t essential as training and support will be provided.
We would like the support worker to support with stimulating activities such as going to soft play, bowling, out for walks, and to the local park.
As this role will be physical, you should have good general health as there will be some lifting from equipment or things he has climbed on, keeping up with him when he is at the park, etc.
As his support worker, you will need to have some experience of supporting children with ASD/Autism/ADHD. Be comfortable with running to keep up with him physically and also be able to set boundaries and be comfortable with disciplining and telling him firmly when he has done something he shouldn’t.
This little boy requires someone who is fun and outgoing, confident, and can be firm when needed. There are some aspects of personal care required, including support with toileting, cleaning up, and washing hands. It will be an advantage; however, not essential, if you are a driver with your own transport. Mileage costs will be reimbursed.
We would also like our support worker to be able to suggest things to do out in the community, so you should be willing to be proactive in finding various activities to take part in.
