Position Summary:
Reporting to the Program Managers in Environmental Health, the Student Public Health Inspector will apply preventive and public health knowledge, techniques, and skills to reduce the incidence of communicable disease, food-borne disease, and health hazards in the community. This position supports the on-going operations of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit while working in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s, Ontario Public Health Standards and associated Protocols and guidelines, the Health Protection and Promotion Act, its Regulations, and any other pertinent legislation.
Position Responsibility:
The Student Public Health Inspector will obtain training relevant for certification by assisting Staff Public Health Inspectors within the department. Student Public Health Inspectors will conduct inspections and investigations within a generalized program under the guidance of certified Public Health Inspectors, and perform such duties while assuring that the objectives of the Board of Certification are being achieved.
Specific duties include:
* Conducting public health inspections and investigations under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, regulations and applicable by-laws
* Investigating complaints, interpreting results and taking appropriate action
* Collecting samples and specimens, and forwarding to the public health laboratory for analysis
* Participating in public health education and promotional activities
Position Qualifications:
Education, training, & experience
* To be eligible for the position, students must be enrolled in an educational institution in Canada that has an approved environmental health program leading to certification as a Public Health Inspector.
Other Requirements:
* Working knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards, Health Protection and Promotion Act and relevant legislation
* Proficiency with current computer applications (Examples: Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet; E-mail)
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
* Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workloads
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Satisfactory vulnerable sector police information search
* Some evening and weekend work may be necessary
* A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours, and 1 million dollars in liability insurance
* TB Test
* WECHU immunization policies must be adhered to
Entry Rate:
* 1st Year: $21.44
* 2nd Year: $22.10
* 3rd Year: $22.74
* 4th Year: $23.43
