Job Opportunity: Lecturer in Benthic Biogeochemistry
The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, delivering marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through innovative research, education and engagement with society.
Based near Oban on the Scottish west coast, our marine research and teaching portfolio is diverse in topic and discipline, global in outlook, project locations and relevance, and delivered by a SAMS team with a can-do attitude working in partnership with academic, business, government, regulatory, voluntary and civic society colleagues.
The ideal candidate will be a key player in driving forward the SAMS program of discovery and applied research in the area of marine benthic biogeochemistry/benthic processes. In this post, you will be expected to engage with both existing SAMS research and commercial projects, develop your own funding streams over time, and contribute to SAMS's programme of education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
A key aspect will be to contribute to the further development of marine aquaculture impact models including New DEPOMOD for use by the fish farming sector and regulators in the UK and overseas regions. You will have demonstrable experience in designing and conducting experimental work in the laboratory and field, and be willing to work with mathematical modellers, or have experience in numerical model development, to implement your findings into real-world applications, particularly in relation to aquaculture and its potential environmental impacts. Prior experience of working with enterprise and/or the aquaculture industry would be an advantage.
Main Responsibilities
* Conduct fundamental and applied research in benthic biogeochemistry/benthic processes to deliver scientific outputs (3/4* papers), presentations at national and international conferences, reports, and research funding applications to deliver high quality science to meet SAMS mission.
* Propose and engage in externally funded commercial work to meet SAMS’ commercial funding targets.
* Contribute to SAMS and departmental science strategies to ensure SAMS maintains its science excellence.
* Contribute to SAMS education strategy at undergraduate, postgraduate, and CPD levels through module leadership and student supervision allowing SAMS to fulfil its educational requirements and UHI to maintain degree awarding powers.
* Enable the smooth running of SAMS through contribution to internal committees, activities, and management of SAMS staff and resources as and when required, to ensure that SAMS managerial and strategic requirements are met.
